MATAURA
BOROUGH ’ COUNCIL
PRESENTATIONS TO MAYOR AND TOWN CLERK
A decision to support the Lake County Council in its attitude towards the hospital levy and capital expenditure was reached at the meeting of the Mataura Borough Council. The Lake County pointed out that expenditure for work of a' capital nature should be met by loan and not by the levy system, so that the burden would be spread over those who would benefit now and in the future.
The district engineer of the Main Highways Board advised that the following grants had been approved for Mataura: £175 (£3 for £1) maintenance; £276 (free), re-sealing Bridge street and sealing bridge approaches; £460 (free), Mataura river bridge and approaches, and £lO5 (£3 for £1), maintenance of Mataura-Waiarikiki highway. Mr T. Ramage was admitted as a deputation. He referred to the fact that over a long period of years representations had been made, in the end successfully, to have the old wooden suspension bridge replaced at Mataura. From the timbers of the old bridge he had fashioned gifts which he desired to hand to the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and town clerk (Mr T. K. Fisher) as small mementoes from friends and well-wishers. These comprised an inscribed walking stick and a T-square. The council applauded the sentiments prompting the gifts and expressed its appreciation to Mr Ramage. The Mayor remarked that he would value the walking stick, while the T-square would serve a very useful purpose in the town clerk’s office. WORK OF THE RED CROSS Members of the Mataura Red Cross Society have been active in recent months collecting articles for a variety of purposes for home use and also for overseas. A recent report issued by the secretary (Mr E. Richmond) indicates that parcels of knitted goods have been forwarded to the Air Force Relations Committee (Wellington) and to the Dunedin centre; 200 garments have been sent to Dunedin for distribution by the organization for the relief of distress; a case of fruit cake and a case of marmalade and two crates of eggs were despatched for the benefit of soldier patients at Bottle Neck Hospital (Christchurch). In all, 1441 garments have now been furnished by the society at Mataura.
