CONTRIBUTION MADE TO PLANE FUND
TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL GIVES £250
(Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, September 13.
A. unanimous decision to contribute £250 .for the purchase of fighter aeroplanes for Britain was made by the Tuapeka County Council at its meeting at Lawrence today. A. suggestion that th . • donation should be £5OO was deferred, as it was considered that there would no doubt be further opportunities of making contributions. Mov-ing-that ’the sum- of £250 should he given, the chairman (Mr R. S. Thompson) said the courity was in . a very satisfactory, financial position. . The war was going to be a long and bitter one. and every penny available would be required, as with the intensification of aerial warfare the wastage of planes would be terrific.
There were many calls on the council’s funds, but the important thing was to win the war first.
Trie motion yyas seconded by Cr J. Bennetts and supported by all other members. . . ■ . . .•. ■'
“It is true that these contributionswill not get-us one fighter that would., not
otherwise be produced,” said Cr E. H. Murney, “but the mere fact that the contribution is entirely voluntary will have fl good effect. I’ll bet Hitler and his coterie would be glad if any of the State's rib has annexed gave him one plarie ,in this. way. They are no doubt giving therii under compulsion, but this is a- : different ' thing, and I wish that more pf the funds being collected in New Zealand today were for the same purpose.” ■
