EXPLOSION IN POWDER FACTORY
NEW JERSEY, September 12.
A terrific explosion shook the Hercules powder plant at Kenvil, as well as its immediate vicinity. Calls were sent out over a wide area for ambulances and first aid squads. Every available fire engine was rushed to the plant. The explosion was felt 20 miles away. The Hercules Company is one of the biggest powder manufacturers in the United States and has a number of plants of which Kenvil is one. The company manufactures powder and dynamite for the Government. It is estimated that at leait 50 persons were killed and 100 injured. The explosion did incalculable damage and will delay the 17,000,000 dollars British and American defence contracts. Thirty bodies have been, recovered.
