AIR DEFENCE OF LONDON
New Types Of Shells
Used
DEADLY BOFORS GUNS IN ACTION (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 13, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 12. The Daily Mail says that the London anti-aircraft batteries are using guns of at least six different calibres, .up to 4.5 inch, which is the most deadly of all anti-aircraft guns. Secret new types of shells are hurtled 22,000 feet, the explosions rocking the ether over a wide area. The heavier guns put up a box type of barrage, which is sent up in squares from many sections, while the light guns make a terrific barrage on raiders attempting to dive-bomb targets. Of these guns the Bofors are the deadliest. The uncanny electric predictors enable the gunners to harass the raiders.
Britain’s anti-aircraft defences have not been weakened in any district to provide London’s barrage, which can be increased if necessary.
