Relief Of Distress In London

IMMEDIATE DESPATCH OF MONEY (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 13. The announcement that the Government has sanctioned the immediate transmission of £lOO,OOO in New Zealand currency to the Lord Mayor of London’? Fund for the relief of distress caused by the German air raids was made by the Governor t General, Lord Galway, as chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board tonight.

Lord Galway said it had been decided to make the grant in recognition and admiration of the wonderful courage and fortitude of the people of London during the most difficult times through which they were passing. This finance would be provided by the National Patriotic Fund Board through its Dominion-wide organization. Details of the allocation among the constituent patriotic authorities of the board were now being arranged, but in order that New Zealand should make its gesture at once the standing committee of the National Patriotic Fund Board had approved of the gift of £100,600. This included the provision of £lO,OOO made from the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund by the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society today.

The question of providing immediate assistance for the relief of distress arising from the air raids in the United Kingdom was considered at a special meeting of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society, presided over by Sir James Elliott. It was unanimously agreed to make immediate provision of £lO,OOO out of the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund to be transmitted to the joint war organization of the Red Cross and the Order of St. John in London to be so utilized.
