The Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., returned to Invercargill by last night’s express from Wellington.
Mr W. F. Sturman, who has been attending a conference in Wellington of patriotic council secretaries, is expected to return to Invercargill by the express this evening. Flight Lieutenant R. B. Bannerman left Gore yesterday to take up his duties at Wigram. During his absence Mr John Tait, of Invercargill, will take his place in the firm of Bowler, Bannerman and Howells for several days each week- Mr Tait has been well known for many years for his interest in the Southland war funds and in returned soldiers’ affairs.
Mr A. McMillan has been elected president of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association.
Mr J. J. Hicks, formerly of the district railways engineer’s office, Dunedin, has taken up his duties as chief clerk of the district engineer’s office, Invercargill. He succeeds Mr A. E. Leggett, who has left to take up, on promotion, a similar position at Christchurch.
Messrs C. C. Derrett (Waipounamu) and E. W. Stevens (Balfour) have been nominated for the vacancy of one seat on the electoral committee of United Wheatgrowers (N.Z.) Ltd. Mr Derrett is the sitting member. A postal ballot will close at Christchurch on September 30. Any grower with 10 or more acres in wheat is entitled to a vote in the ballot.
Mr J. Curran, stationmaster at Palmerston, will succeed Mr L. E. B. Edwards, stationmaster at Bluff, who has retired from the ■ service. Mr S. E. Smith, stationmaster at Mataura, will be transferred to Palmerston, and Mr H. J. Davie, of the train-running staff at Invercargill, will succeed Mr Smith at Mataura.
Dr Malcolm Gray, of Christchurch, has been appointed second in command of the 7th Field Ambulance in the ExI ditionary Force. For the last 14 years he has been cardiologist at the Christchurch Hospital. Messrs J. D. Waddell and F. McKenzie, members of the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Choir, who will be leaving shortly for a military camp, were the guests of the choir recently. The Rev. C. J. Tocker presented them with a fountain pen each on behalf of the choir and wished them success. Other speakers were Messrs F. H. Johnson and H. P. Weston.
Dr lan Lauder, formerly of Christchurch, who is at present on the staff of Melbourne University, has been appointed to a senior lectureship in the physics department pf the University of Brisbane.
Dr E. F. Thomson, formerly of New Zealand, who has been in charge of the pathological department of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, has been appointed director of the pathology department of the medical branch of the Australian Imperial Force with the rank of major. He is a son of Mr F. Thomson, of Christchurch. Mr W. E. Bush has been appointed by the directors of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., to succeed Mr J. J. Kingston as manager of the Auckland branch of the company. Mr Kingston will retire on September 30, and Mr Bush, who has been chief clerk in the branch office for the past 24 years, will take up his new duties on October 1.
