WINTON
BOROUGH COUNCIL SEVERAL COMMITTEES SET UP At Monday evening’s meeting of the Winton Borough Council the Mayor (Mr N. Metzger) presided over Crs G. W. Walters, W. Brandford, W. H. J. Shaw, F. Tilley and T. N. Eastlake. Mr W. Brandford, who was recently appointed to the council, was duly sworn in as a councillor, and a welcome was extended by the Mayor. Cr Tilley was appointed DeputyMayor. The following committees were appointed:—Works Committee, Crs Walters (chairman) and Brandford; Reserves, Cemetery and Sanitary Committee, Crs Shaw (chairman) and Tilley;. Finance, Lighting and Fire Prevention Committee, Crs Eastlake (chairman) and Goodall. The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, advised that it was now proposed that the organizations set up under the Emergency Precautions Scheme should be taken over by his department for the duration of the war so that they could be co-ordinated and in future these organizations would be part of the Emergency Reserve Corps. As a recognition of the outstanding service rendered to the town by Mr T. Walker during his long term as Mayor it was decided, on the motion of Crs Walters and Eastlake, to make a presentation to Mr Walker from the council.
Cr Walters complimented the contractors on the fine job made of the Centennial Gates, and said he was sure that the general design of the gates would meet with unqualified approval. The Mayor stated that perhaps some opening ceremony might be held if an opportunity arose. Cr Tilley mentioned that the State houses in Winton were nearing completion and he considered that it would be desirable, in view of the great demand for houses, to urge upon the Government to erect additional, houses in the town. It was decided to obtain further information on the matter. FAREWELL SOCIAL i PILOT OFFICER STEWART A farewell social was tendered to Pilot Officer Eric Stewart, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Stewart, of Winton, in the Masonic Hall, Winton. The Mayor (Mr N. Metzger) presided over a big attendance, and, during the evening the dancing was interspersed With songs by Misses Valma and Norma Stewart. Miss Dorothy Walker,, Mrs J.. de la Perrelle and Mr George' Lindsay. The Rev. W. L. S. Harbour and Mr T. N. Eastlake acted as masters of ceremonies. Pilot Officer P. Scott, of Balclutha, a friend of the guest of the evening, was among those present. Mr Metzger expressed his pleasure in handing an envelope containing a sum of money to Pilot Officer Stewart, and, in extending congratulations and best wishes for his safe return, referred to the gallantry of the members of the Empire’s air forces. Mr C. Grimwobd, president of the Winton Returned Soldiers’ Association, also congratulated Pilot Officer Stewart upon gaining his commission and wished him the best of health and good fortune. Pilot Officer Stewart replied.
Befora the social function Pilot Officer Stewart was the recipient of a presentation from the Winton Returned Soldiers’ Sub-Association in the club rooms, the president, Mr C. F. Grimwood, referring to the pleasure it gave the members to honour a soldier son of a member of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association executive.
The president’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs N. G. Pigou, T. Springford, J. Welfare, O. A. B. Smith, W. Brandford and P. Boylen. Pilot Officer Ste Wart thanked the members for their gift.
