RATEPAYERS SAVE £587 DISCOUNT ON RATES PAID PROMPTLY The sum of £587 was saved by ratepayers who took advantage of the Gore Borough Council’s concession for prompt payment of rates. That was the amount of the discount of 5 per cent, on £11,139 paid in rates up to 4.30 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon. Some payments were also received in the mail yesterday morning. "Wednesday was the last day on which the discount was available. From yes-' terday the full rates demanded are payable, and payments made after February 26, 1941, will carry a 10 per cent, penalty for late payment. As expected by the Borough Council office staff, there was a last-minute rush by many ratepayers to save the discount. A total of £2420 was paid on Tuesday and on the last day £2227/2/6 was received, that sum together with payments by mail received yesterday morning making a total of £11,139 m rates paid. The levy for the year is £16,008, and the amount received, together with the discount, leaves £4282 outstanding. In the last three years the collections have been higher than the previous average, and this year’s total exceeds by 2 per cent, the record collection of 1938. The amount collected this year represents more than 73 per cent, of the total rates struck.
