PARCELS FOR MEN IN THE FORCES

CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO BE SENT OVERSEAS

Every Southland man serving in the fighting forces overseas will receive a Christmas parcel. A total of 1380 parcels will be required and of this number 380 will be supplied by the Eastern District. The rest of Southland will contribute the remaining 1000 parcels.

All parcels must be at the receiving depot in Invercargill by Monday. A start has already been made with the packing of the parcels and this work will be continued for about two weeks. The parcels are being made up in Invercargill by the Invercargill Women’s Metropolitan Committee, with the assistance of the city sub-committees. Circulars have been- sent to 50 committees requesting parcels. Many of them have given cash and the money for these parcels should be sent to the Town Hall.

Because of the congestion at the depot, the St. John Ambulance Association has lent its hall for the packing of the parcels. However, all goods must be addressed to the depot, The Southland Times building, Esk street. There is a shortage of clean flour bags and calico for wrapping the parcels. Tea tins are wanted for the packing of biscuits and cases are also needed.

The parcels that are to be sent overseas will include Christmas cake, chocolates, biscuits, sweets, cigarette or pipe tobacco, fruit and a handkerchief.
