BOXING
SOUTHLAND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS
TITLE. EVENTS DECIDED AT BLUFF The Southland amateur boxing championships were conducted by the Bluff Boxing Club in the Bluff Town Hall last night. An excellent attendance of spectators from all over Southland was present and was treated to a good standard of boxing. The new champions are:— Flyweight.—A. Ogilvy (Invercargill). Paperweight.—N. Drake (Ocean Beach). Bantamweight.—J. Edgeler (Temuka) Lightweight.—W. Brown (Invercargill). ■ Welterweight.—L. Bolger (Mataura). Middleweight.—W. Enright (Invercargill). Light Heavyweight—W. Enright (Invercargill). Heavyweight.—D. Anderson (Invercargill). Junior Featherweight.—M. Wilson (Invercargill). Following are the results:— FLYWEIGHT F. Brown (7.8) beat R. Warburton (8.0) (Invercargill) (Invercargill) For a championship event this bout was a disappointment. Brown scored with the few clean punches which were thrown. The referee stopped the fight after Warburton fell to the floor. FINAL A. Ogilvie (7.13) beat F. Brown (7.8) (Invercargill) (Invercargill) Ogilvie won the first two rounds and the bout by scoring with the only punches thrown. Brown left his run too late. PAPERWEIGHT N. Drake (6.9) . beat J. Mclntosh (7.0) (Ocean Beach) (Mataura) Drake scored with a two-handed attack and drove Mclntosh around the ring. Mclntosh settled down and used an effective left, and in the second round he gained the lead with clean work with both hands. Drake made up some of the leeway in the third round and shook Mclntosh with two good rights, but he did not appear to overtake Mclntosh’s lead. Drake got a points decision.
P. Anderson (6.3) beat C. Nolan (6.2) (Bluff) (Gore)
Anderson, giving away ’height and reach, went into his man and swung rights and lefts with abandon. Nolan fought back and scored freely, but he could not stop the boring Anderson, who displayed remarkable stamina for a little chap. In the last round Nolan punished Anderson, but apparently he did not make up the leeway as the verdict went to Anderson. Final Drake beat Anderson. Straight work won this bout for Drake, who stood up to Anderson’s swinging and got home repeatedly with lefts and rights. Anderson appeared to I be troubled by his eyes, both of which I were swollen from punches received I in his first bout. Drake won well and I gave a promising exhibition. Anderson used his right swing often, but had no counter-punch. BANTAMWEIGHT J. Edgeler (8.5) beat F. Baldey (8.6) I (Temuka) (Invercargill) Edgeler was the aggressor and shaded Baldey in every round. It was a quiet bout. Baldey fought on the defensive almost throughout’ and was regularly beaten to the punch. A right swing stood the winner in good stead. LIGHTWEIGHT W. Brown (9.0) beat P. Rushton (9.6) (Invercargill) (Dunedin) Rushton opened strongly and scored with both hands, but Brown, fighting well, quickly settled down and took the lead. He beat Rushton to the punch in several exchanges and showed cleverness in evading Rushton's long-range work. The Dunedin boy got through Brown’s guard occasionally, but at no stage was he Brown’s master. Final W. Brown beat M. Beadle (9.2) (Wallacetown) Brown won all the way. He was too clever for Beadle who retired in the third round with an injured thumb. WELTERWEIGHT
L. Bolger (10.51) H. Haggerty (10.7) • (Mataura) beat (Invercargill Bolger missed repeatedly until he ! connected with a hard right to Haggerty’s jaw. Haggerty took a count of nine, but was distressed on rising and the referee stopped the fight. Final Bolger beat D. McKenzie (Woodend) Both boxers showed a keenness to mix it and the result was a bout full of action. Some heavy punching was seen. In the third round the boxers threw defence to the winds in one rally which favoured McKenzie. Bolger’s work was the cleaner, however, and he got the verdict, thus winning both Southland and Otago titles this season. McKenzie was applauded for a game display. LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT W. Enright 11.1 beat D. Anderson 12.3 (Invercargill) (Invercargill) Much holding spoiled the first two rounds of this bout, so much so that the referee warned the boxers to fight and not to wrestle. The third round produced some action in which both men delivered punches. Enright scored more cleanly than Anderson and got the verdict. T. Denny (Burnham) 12.0 beat L. Braithwaite (Bluff) 11.6
Braithwaite, boxing in characteristic rugged style, made a good foil for the quick-moving Denny, who boxed with plenty of confidence and at times made the spectators laugh by his antics. There were a few hard exchanges and in these Denny was superior. FINAL
Enright beat Denny by default.
SPECIAL WELTERWEIGHT BOUT H. McKnight (Invercargill) 10.3 beat W. Spence (Riverton) 10.1
Much wild swinging by Spence marked this bout. McKnight punched cleanly and in the third round he shook Spence with a right to the jaw. Spence weathered the round and appeared to hold his early lead, but McKnight got the verdict. JUNIOR FEATHERWEIGHT M. Wilson 9.0 beat M. Turner 8.13 (Invercargill) (Bluff)
Wilson gave a splendid exhibition.of two-handed boxing. He was on top all the way and won by a big margin. The referee stopped the fight in the third
round. Turner put up a game display, but was outclassed by a clever boy. FINAL Wilson beat M. Tennet (8.12) (Bluff) Tennet put up a surprisingly good showing against Wilson,'who was fully extended in the best bout of the evening. , MIDGET BOUT K. Wilson (5.5) drew with B. Double (5.2) (Invercargill) (Mataura)
These boys gave a good exhibition. Doudle fought gamely against a smart boxer who showed much prdmise and punched hard and cleanly.
