USE OF SET NETS FOR WHITEBAIT

ACCLIMATIZATION SOCIETY DISCUSSION The possibility of set nets for catching whitebait being allowed in rivers other than the Mataura, was considered by the executive of the Southland Acclimatization Society at its meeting last night. It was stated that the Marine Department was drafting new regulations allowing set nets to be used in othei’ rivers.

“Persons go out with scoop nets and they fright,en more whitebait away than they catch,” said Mr H. E. Fraser. There was an element of sport in this method, but if set nets were allowed on the Oreti and Aparima rivers the whitebait would be cleaned out of them. Giving an example of the efficacy of set nets, Mr Fraser said that he knew of one instance where a man with two set nets had caught more than 200 quarts of whitebait in less than two hours.

Another member stated that he had found fishermen using set nets on a river other than the Mataura and that no licences permitting them to use the nets had been held by the persons.

It was decided to forward a remit to the council of the South Island Acclimatization Societies suggesting that the Government’s attention be drawn to breaches of the whitebait fishing regulations.
