PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET

MATCHES THIS SEASON NOT FAVOURED Tire Canterbury Cricket Association doCs not favour the playing of Plunket Shield games for the 1940-41 season. This was the decision made by delegates to the annual meeting of the association on Tuesday, following a request from the New Zealand Cricket Council for an opinion on the problem. The delegates, while supporting the continuation of interprovincial fixtures, were unanimously against playing the shield games. When the letter from the council was read, Mr f. W. C. Tothill (Christ’s College) claimed that while there should not be Plunket Shield matches, the home-and-home matches ought not to be stopped, particularly because of the younger players. He thought the association should, as far as possible, get away from competition cricket; what were usually termed “friendly games” were needed. Father C. J. Callaghan (St. Bedes) said that the attitude of the union had been made clear early in the season, when the issue of volunteering was to the forefront. He thought definitely that provincial games should be gone on with. Cricket was an important and essential item in the life of the people and he thought that the authorities would not want to see the sport greatly curtailed during tire war. The president, Mr W. L. King, agreed that the shield games should cease for the duration of the war, but that -the home-and-home matches should be played. It would be quite possible, he said, for Canterbury to play Wellington or Otago, but it would be impossible to travel to Auckland, for instance. 1
