vivian McGrath in QUEENSLAND
Vivian McGrath has been transferred to Queensland, and for some time at least his services will be lost to New South Wales tennis. Though no inter-State matches are likely for some time, he will be greatly missed at tournaments in New South Wales country centres, as well as in the metropolitan area, states a Sydney writer. He has always been ready to help the game, and has taken a keen interest in the younger players.
Dinnie Pails, a promising young player, is taking McGrath’s place in Sydney with the sporting firm by whom the latter is employed.
INVERCARGILL CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING
“The season was quite a successful one considering the war conditions,” said the annual report of the Invercargill Tennis Club, which was presented at the annual meeting last night. "There were only three grades in the interclub competitions and we entered a team in each. Our B grade team was again successful in winning its grade, while the A and C teams played well in all their matches.
“The winners of the club championships, Mrs G. R. Hanan and I. Shand, represented the club in the Gallaway Cup singles competitions and each did well to be runner-up,” continued the report. "In the B grade championships the men’s singles was won by H. J. Sayer, but the women’s singles final has not yet been played. The cup donated by the president, Dr J. G. Macdonald, for the most improved player, was won by Mrs E. G. Truscott. The president has also donated a challenge cup for the women’s singles championship which has been won for the season by Mrs G. R. Hanan. “The club was again well represented in the Southland team by A. J. Deaker, Misses K. Cutt and L. Barrett. A number of our members were also selected to represent various town teams. In the Southland championships Miss Cutt won the women’s ■ singles for the first time, and she is to be congratulated on a fine performance. The balancesheet shows a credit balance of £5l/1/5 —a small loss on the year’s working.”
The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Dr J. G. Macdonald; vice-presidents, Messrs A. J.
Deaker, W. J. Hamilton, L. Larcombe and G. J. Reed; joint secretaries and treasurers, Misses M. Shand and L. Barrett; club captain, Mr E. Rout; deputy club captain, Miss K. Cutt; committee, Mrs Larcombe, Miss M. Pollok and Messrs A. Miller, E. Truscott and K. Williams; hon. auditor, Mr A. Lang; delegates to the Southland Tennis Association, Messrs A. J. Deaker and L. Larcombe. The thanks of the club were extended to the president for the donation of a silver challenge cup for the women’s singles championship. Opening day was fixed for September 21. Members serving with the lorces overseas were granted free membership and those serving for three months in the territorial camps will be granted a reduction of half the subscription.
