HORSES BACK IN WORK

Lucky Feather And Sir

Denis Resume

SOLO SOLD TO GO TO AUSTRALIA Acceptances for the Geraldine meeting close on Monday. At Avondale H. N. Wiggins will ride Queen City and Gamos at Avondale on Saturday. Invercargill Trots Nominations for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting close on Friday, September 18. At New Brighton After a strong drying wind the track at New Brighton today is expected to provide good going. King’s Jubilee King’s Jubilee gave the idea in recent starts that he would not be long oft the winning list. A Stayer Wainoni Girl is a reallf good stayer and a race such as the Pacific Handicap today will suit her. Ghandi Resumes A. B. Rattray is working Ghandi, Tracey Lass, Drummer Boy and a four-year-old gelding by Worthy Bond from May Tracey. Carver Doone Carver Doone showed a dash of his old brilliance at the National meeting and he may not be long in returning to form. In Favour There are few better mile saddle horses about than Happy Locanda ana his claims to favouritism in the Electric Handicap today stand out. Not Well Placed

Hatrack has had very few classes to suit him since he was sent to Canterbury and from 60 yards back at New Brighton today he is set rather a difficult task.

A Prospect

Ringtrue has never impressed as being a really good stayer but the Travis Axworthy horse should run a great mile off the front of the Wainoni Handicap. Foals To Arrive

Three well-known sires in the south —Nigger Minstrel, Paper Money and Songbird—have died within the last week or two. The last of their foals are due this season.

Gold Bank

If Gold Bank was caught in the humour he would keep the milers busy at New Brighton. Judging by his best performances Gold Bank looks unbeatable—on paper. Well Treated

On his best form Nigger Boy appeared well treated in the weights at the Wanganui meeting although he did not start either day. Blew Hard

For a horse so well seasoned with racing Royal Star II blew very hard after the Marangi Handicap at Awapuni. It was subsequently stated that he had eaten his bedding overnight, but backers who made him favourite were not aware of that. Great Bingen’s Record

Indianapolis, winner of three New Zealand Trotting Cups and believed to be the greatest pacer bred outside of America, won £10,257 in stakes. Great Bingen (who failed to win a New Zealand Cup) is New Zealand’s greatest light harness winner, his total being £14,000.

A Change Safe Voyage, who was trained at Forbury Park last season, is now in work at Gore. The Happy Voyage mare has shown a useful turn of speed at times but has not been reliable.

Southern Smile

When she finished third to Smile Again and Loyal Pat over a mile in saddle at Addington Southern Smile paced the journey in 2min 9 4-ssec. She has been some time off the winning list but is not past her best.

Oregon’s Promise J. Walsh has placed Oregon and also a three-year-old filly by Quite Sure from Erin’s Princess (the dam of Cheval d’Or) in work. Oregon, who is out of that good mare Probationer, shaped well enough last season to suggest that she will win races. Lucky Feather

F. W. Ellis has taken up Lucky leather again. This Full Feather gelding has shaped well in the little racing he has done, but had to be put aside after a couple of races last season. He is expected to make a name for himself over middle distances later. May Make Amends

Nelson Eddy failed rather badly at the National meeting, but in spite of good track work before the meeting he was in need of the racing as he is inclined to grossness. The Nelson Derby horse is nicely placed at New Brighton today and there is good reason to respect his chance. Sir Denis Resumes

Sir Denis has been taken up by R. E. McLellan and during his absence from the tracks he has furnished into a fine type of four-year-old. The halfbrother to Milford won one race in four starts last season and he gives the impression that he will win over some ground later. Three-Year-Olds

The appearance of the three-year-olds Lou Rosa, Phaleron, Gay Miss, Grandora, Marshall Hall, and Queen City in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, should invest the race with interest, for the event is likely to furnish a line upon the Avondale Guineas on the second day. Of this lot Lou Rosa and Gay Miss are the only two handicapped at over weight-for-age,' but their form last season was impressive. It is possible, ) however, that the favourite will be Llandaff, who was not produced, at Ellerslie last month owing to the soft track.

Gore Mare Sold

It is reported that the Songbird mare Solo, whose dam Unawed also produced Meadow Lark, Island Linnet and Ballad, was sold last week to Mr F. W. Hughes, who has made several brood mare purchases in the Dominion in re-

cent weeks. It is likely that Solo will be mated with the Derby winner Coronach, who recently arrived in NewZealand. Solo was raced very little, but in training she showed she was possessed of much of the family speed until her career was cut short as the result of an injury. She is. a six-year-old mare by Songbird from Unawed, by Markhope from Unawares, by Gipsy Grand from Ambush. Riders Engaged

The following are some of the riding engagements made for the Ashburton meeting.on Saturday: L. J. EllisPleading, King’s Toast, Iceland Spar, Royal Chief; J. W. Jennings, Guilder, Whiphand; A. Messervy—Sweet Mystery, Glenora Boy, The Vulture, Ryetown, Rebel Star; P. Spratt—Green Gables, Wagner, Don’t Forget, Great Night, Shikari; C. T.
