RECLAMATION OF WASTE
SCHOOL SUPPORT DESIRED
“The help of all primary and secondary schools in Southland has been solicited for the reclamation of nonferrous metals and it is fully expected that with the help of the school children the whole of the province will be covered,” said the organizer for the Southland Board for the Reclamation of Waste Materials, Mr C. S. Mackay, yesterday, when discussing the collection of waste materials. Mr Mackay said that the acting secretary of the Southland Education Board, Mr T. J. Gosling, had agreed to advise all schools in Southland of the scheme and it was fully expected that good results would, be obtained. “There are two purposes in this scheme,” said Mr Mackay, “one is to benefit the Patriotic Fund and the other, perhaps the most important, is to bring this waste material into production.
“In regard to waste paper generally the Southland Board is not yet in a position to open a depot,” said Mr Mackay, “nor is it able, as yet, to begin a public collection of this material because the mills that reprocess this paper are not able at the moment to take delivery of any large quantities.” In addition to the list of receiving agents for cast iron, which was published a few days ago, Macalisters Ltd., have agreed to act as collecting agents.
