BOMBS DROPPED ON RAILWAY STATION
R.A.F. Scores Direct Hits STREETS IN CENTRE OF CITY EVACUATED (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 11, 11.35 p.m.) LONDON, September 11. The great Potsdam railway station, in the centre of Berlin, has been heavily bombed by the Royal Air Force.- In a raid last night it was repeatedly hit by heavy bombs and showers of incendiary bombs. The Potsdam station is one of Berlin’s main termini lines running from there to Magdeburg and south-west Germany.
Great precision was shown by the bomb-aimers of the raiding squadron. Although a haze covered the city they located this target and the pilots of all the machines claimed direct hits. They glided in to the attack through an anti-aircraft barrage and then released their bombs. Fires broke out immediately.
So great is the damage to Berlin as a result of the latest British raids that the German News Agency has. been forced to make an official statement giving details, but there is no reference to military objectives. The news agency states that many buildings have been hit and whole streets in the centre of the city have had to be evacuated. Even the handiwork of the Fuhrer and Reichmarshal Goering has suffered. Bombs fell on the EastWest Axis, which Hitler Created by drawing a pencil through Berlin, the Reichstag, which Goering burned down in 1933 and which has been partially rebuilt, and the Brandenburg Gate. The raiders circled low over the city and dropped flares before their bombs.
The fourth terror raids on London were less severe than on the preceding nights and casualties were fewer. Bombs were dropped at random and fires were started in warehouses and factories. The most tragic occurrence was a direct hit on a school building in the East End, which was being used to shelter 500 homeless persons. It is feared that many were killed.
