LAWN TENNIS

U.S. SINGLES TITLE WON BY McNEIL RIGGS BEATEN IN STIRRING FINAL (Received September 10, 6.30 p.m.) FOREST HILLS, September 9. D. McNeil gave the national tennis singles championship one of the most stirring finishes in history when he beat the defending champion, R. L. Riggs, 4-6, 6-8, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, after being hopelessly outplayed in the first two sets. McNeil started a forcing game, and the crowd was breathless as he frequently broke through at the net. He was irresistible, despite a brilliant resistance by Riggs. Miss Alice Marble easily overpowered Miss Helen Jacobs 6-2, 6-3, winning her third consecutive national championship. She played a solid all-round game, lacking her usual brilliance, but she was very effective against Miss Jacobs’s precision.
