PATRIOTIC FUNDS EASTERN DISTRICT TOTAL NOW £10,082

The total amount contributed in Eastern Southland to the Patriotic Funds is now £10,082/10/7. Additional contributions to the Gore, Wendon, Balfour, Riversdale and Pukerau-Kaiwera funds are acknowledged by the secretary of the Eastern Southland Patriotic Committee (Mr R. S. Green) as follows:—

CHRISTMAS PARCELS FOR TROOPS

The Eastern Southland Patriotic Committee’s appeal for contributions of 10/for Christmas parcels for the forces overseas is meeting with a good response from the public and already £l7 has been subscribed. Additional contributions are acknowledged by the secretary (Mr R. S. Green) as follows:—

APPEAL FOR FLOUR BAGS The Gore Patriotic Committee is appealing for contributions of clean flour bags, which are very useful for packing parcels for soldiers. The 251 b size is the handiest, but 501 b bags can also be used. The Gore school children are undertaking to call at all houses in the town to collect bags, and it is hoped that citizens will make this drive a success. WOMEN’S GOLF

By beating Miss N. Paterson in the final of the Gore Ladies’ Golf Club A grade championship, Miss K. Kirk won the title for the fifth time in seven years. Her previous successes were in 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1939.

The match was played on the Croydon links in fairly good conditions and both players showed good form. Miss Paterson was two up at the end of the first 18 holes, and she held her advantage early in the afternoon, putting particularly well. Close scoring continued throughout the afternoon round and the match was decided at the last ’green, where Miss Kirk was two up. SEALED HOLE MATCH DRAW The draw of the Gore Ladies’ Golf Club for a sealed hole match to be played tomorrow and on Saturday is as follows: — Mrs G. Mitchell v. Mrs D. S. McLeod; Miss I. Presentations were made to each of the members by Mr E. C. Smith, who extended best wishes for the future. Several other members spoke and Messrs Bannerman, Paterson and Smyth replied.
