SOUTHEND CLUB’S MEETING
There was a smaller attendance than I usual at the annual meeting of the Southend Tennis Club. The president, Mr L. E. Raines, was chairman. The annual report stated that the last season had proved very enjoyable, interest being maintained in spite of the loss of several members. R McCallum, one of the most prominent members, was in Egypt, while D. J. Henry and A. J. Henry had joined the Air Force. Another senior member, J. Buchan, was at present in camp. The present membership stood at 35, representing a slight increase over that for the preceding year. This year the committee would need to pay special attention to the finances and membership as all male members were now liable for military service. At present the bank balance was £2/1/11, compared with £2/14/6 at the same date last year. The club’s courts and surroundings were in excellent condition for the start of the new season. Teams had been entered in the three grade competitions conducted by the Southland Lawn Tennis Association and while none was successful, many enjoyable games were played. The playing record was as follows :—
Congratulations were extended to Miss L. Mehaffey on being chosen to play in the Otago-Southland representative match and also to Mesdames Duncan and Raines, Miss Tansley and Messrs Fortune and Breen,, who played in sub-association representative matches. Recently the club lost a valuable member in Mr A. E. Fortune, who had been transferred to Beaumont.
The club conducted the usual club championships. The women’s singles were won by Mrs E. Duncan, while A. Breen won the men’s championship singles.
The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr W. R. Rea; president, Mr L. E. Raines; vice-presidents, Messrs F. G. Stevenson, A. Derbie, H. T. Thompson, C. N. Lawless, E. C. Kelly and L. S.
