YOUNG PACERS

Two-Year-Olds Raced At Wanganui

DUNCANNON’S RETURN TO FORM Acceptances for the Ashburton County meeting are due today. New Brighton Trots , The New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will now be held on Thursday.

Plenty Of Three-Year-Olds No fewer than 17 of the horses engaged in the Novice Stakes, to be run at Ashburton next Saturday, are three-year-olds, and seven of them are Dunedin Guineas candidates. Duncannon In Form

Duncannon appears to have caught backers unawares at Awapuni. Duviously he must have been considered short of a race. On his second o Density in the Great Easter and his second with 9.2 in the Challenge Stakes he was not overweighted. Dictate Recovered

Dictate has been on the easy list since the Grand National meeting at which he suffered a kick on a hock on the concluding day. He is expected to race again at the South Canterbury meeting next month. His stable mate Rebellion is to race in open company at Ashburton, and will appreciate the light weight after the heavy burdens he has been asked to carry in recent months. Arctic Dawn ’ Arctic Dawn, by Defoe from Aurora Borealis, is an interesting young horse in work again under G. Ridgway s care at Riccarton. He has grown into a bi o three-year-old, and is not likely to be raced until the autumn. Interesting Suggestion

At the annual meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club, the following motion was carried: —“That the attention of the Minister of Internal Affairs be drawn to the difficulties of many country clubs, that it be respectfully suggested to him that clubs with a daily turnover of less than £lo,ooo average again receive the extra 1 per cent, not granted in the 1939-40 season; and that the Racing Conference be advised of the resolution with a view to getting their support.” An Adioo Guy Mare

In this column last week it was mentioned that a number of Adioo Guy mares about would be much more valuable as brood mares instead of being used as hacks. During the week-end the writer received a note from a Southland soldier at Burnham stating that he had an Adioo Guy mare from a Logan Pointer mare which he was prepared to sell. Guineas Winner

Sir Beau, who was held to be the best two-year-old raced last season, is a son of Beau Pere, a Son-in-Law horse who has met with outstanding success at the stud. Rose Ray, the dam of Sir Beau, was a Chief Ruler mare from the imported mare Rosie Desmond, by Farasi. Rosie Desmond was also the dam of Festivity, Mireusonta, Rosamond, Kiosk, Just So, Prince Desmond. The Legal Point

It is reported that one of the grounds of the appeal lodged by W. J. Broughton, H. N. Wiggins, A. E. Didham, G. R. Tattersail and P. Burgess against being granted conditional licences for three months, is that the executive of the Racing Conference has no power under its rules to issue a licence for a term shorter than 12 months, though it has power to attach certain conditions to licences. The other ground of the appeal is that the appellants are men of good repute, and that there is no sound reason why they should not have been granted licences for the full 12 months. Mr C. S. Thomas, one of the leading solicitors in Christchurch, is acting for the appellants, and the appeal will be heard by three judges appointed by the executive of the Racing Conference.

Early Two-year-olds The blood lines of the placed horses in the Wanganui Debutante Stakes—the first two-year-old classic of the season —are of more than ordinary interest. The winner,’ Tetratina, is a filly by Theio from Squeeze, a sister to Cuddle and half-sister to Padishah and Fondle. Squeeze, who was got by Pyschology from Caress, a Martian mare from Trichas (imp.), by Thrush, is also the dam of Cuddler and Prudent Prince. Tetratina is one of the first of Theio’s stock to race. Theio is a grey horse like his sire Tetratema and grandsire Tetrarch. Theio’s dam was Thyene, by Sunstar, by Sundridge. Greek Step, who was second, is a filly by The Greek from Weatherstep, by Weathervane from Mazurka, the dam of Patuki, Solfem, Bugle Note, Bolero and Waitaka. Mazurka was got by Martian from Two Step, by Stepniak from Far Away, by Bill of Portland from Happy Land, by Musket. Her sire, The Greek is an Australian-bred horse by Thracian (by Valais).

Three-year-old Pacers The fact that 31 three-year-old pacers remain in the Winton Juvenile Stakes to be run in December clearly illustrates the popularity of these races in the province. This year’s event will be the third season it has been held and each year greater patronage has been given by owners. The three-year-olds who stand their ground are a high-class lot and their presence will swell the maiden ranks later in the year. A Quite Sure filly from Logan’s Mission ranks as a half-sister to Grand Mogul, Aspirant and Smile Again. A filly by Quite Sure from Lome Nurse, is a half-sister to Icilma, one of the most promising young pacers raced last term. Lome Nurse is a half-sister by Drusus to Nelson Pointer. A colt by Worthy Bond from May Tracey is a halfbrother to Fairhaven, War Paint, Seaworthy and other winners. Mr H. Hunter has engaged a colt by Royal Silk from First Water, the dam of Rocks Ahead, Nell Grattan, Oasis, Ned Worthy and others. A Quite Sure filly from Miss Adonis and a filly by the same sire from Erin’s Fortune are members of the same maternal line as that which produced Nelson’s Victory, Carver Doone, Stirling Lady and a host of others. Seamist, an outstanding square trotter a few seasons back, is represented by a colt by Quite Sure, while a high opinion is held of a filly by the same-sire from All Sunshine, a daughter of Winsoon, a New Zealand Cup winner.. A filly by Royal Silk from Baker Girl is a half-sister to Foremost Junior, while a filly by Quite Sure from Erin’s Princess, is a half-sister to Cheval d’Oro, winner of the Winton Juvenile Stakes 12 months ago. A Quite Sure colt from Wrackoda (Wrack-Soda) is expected to make a name for himself early as did his half-brother Turco. Sure, a Peter Chenault mare who won good races a few seasons ago, is represented by the first of her produce, in a colt by Rey de Oro. Sure ranks as a

half-sister to Probationer, Chevalier. Salalon and others. There are others in the field which can also claim to be well related and members of good Southland families. Man O’ War

It is 19 years since Man o’ War, the American champion of his day, was retired.from racing, but it is said that even yet 30,000 tourists each year turn out of their touring way to call at the farm near Lexington (Kentucky) where Man o’ War spends his twilight days. A small charge is made and the proceeds go to charity. Man o’ War was unequalled as a racer in 1919 and 1920. ?mong the most notable of his progeny have been War Admiral, Battleship (winner of the Liverpool Grand National) and Seabiscuit, who recently raised his total stake earnings above that of Sun Beau to set a new world’s record of over £BO,OOO. Man o’ War still runs seven miles a day, canters through blue grass (the pasture for which the Lexington district is famed), u nd proudly shows off his chestnut coat to the sightseers who call to look him over.
