QUEENSTOWN

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS The monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council was held in the Library rooms. The Mayor (Dr W;,A. Anderson) presided over Councillors Gauntlett Curtis,' Scheib, Mclnnes, Fix and Herbert. ' ■ Cr Herbert, who was recently appointed a councillor was welcomed by the Mayor. < • The National Service Department, Employment Bureau, Queenstown, ad-

vised that Scheme 13 workers who were working under awards were entitled to the 5 per cent; increase. This increase did not affect’ the department’s rate of subsidy and therefore the increase in wages would have to be met by the council. Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., advised that some time ago a petition was lodged by the Mayor and council protesting against the inclusion of the borough of Queenstown in the Lake County Power Board district. By consent the petition was adjourned to enable art agreement to be considered .by the council and Power Board. He stated that the time had now arrived when it had to be dealt with by the Parliamentary committee. As the matter in dispute appeared to have been settled by the inclusion of most of the lakes area in the Otago Central Power Board he asked if the petition might now be withdrawn. ' -: ?■/ ' - It was' ddeided/td advise- Mr Bodkin that, as the second Schedule of the agreement eliminated the Queenstown borough from the Otago Central Power Board the petition would now be withdrawn. The Lake County Council requested

the council’s views on the Southland Hospital Board’s levy for capital expenditure. The Lake County contended that work of a definite capital nature should.be met out of . loan instead of a levy system. The council approved of the principle of the county’s view. It was decided to hold Arbor Day on September 18, the planting to be done on the Queenstown hill by the school chldren, who. would be entertained by the council at a picnic in the afternoon.
