HEALTH CAMP AT ROXBURGH

BUILDING WORK TO START SOON COMPLETION BY END OF MARCH Tenders have been called for the erection of the King George V health camp at Roxburgh. The camp will serve for the whole of the Otago and Southland district south of the Waitaki River and it will be controlled by a regional committee representative of the various health camp committees in Southland and Otago. An advisory committee consisting of residents of the Roxburgh area is to be appointed to assist the staff. The building will have concrete foundations, the walls will be of fibrous ' cement on wood frames and the interior of fibrous plaster. The buildings will be centrally heated and it is expected that the camp will be completed by the end of Marbh. The cost of the camp will be drawn from the King George V Memorial Fund. It is proposed that as many as 58 children should be in residence throughout the year, and that number will be increased by 50 during the summer holiday period. Their entry will be determined by the reports of the school doctors. A matron and nurses will be permanently attached to the camp, which will also have a cook and a kitchen staff. For the upkeep, of the camp the committee will be dependent largely upon the sale of health stamps, but parents who are able to do so will be expected to contribute towards the keep of their children.

BUILDINGS ON A PLATEAU

The buildings are to be erected on a plateau between the motor camp and the golf links at Roxburgh and they will be grouped around a grassed courtyard, on either side of which will be the girls’ and boys’ dormitories. On the north side will be two schoolrooms which may be used alternatively as dormitories and at the southern end will be the reception room, dining room and offices. A detached building is to be used as a medical clinic; a sick bay with rooms for boys and girls and accommodation for the nurse in charge will also be erected in the grounds. The spacious grounds will be planted with trees for shelter purposes by the Young Farmers’ Club; there will be paddling pools in the courtyard and the Roxburgh Borough Council has given a large area of ground for use as a playing field. A terrace will be provided in front of the classrooms for open air work.
