Dunedin, June 4. . A heavy frost on Tuesday night was accepted as herald of favourable weather to-day and so it proved as the concluding occasion of the Dunedin Jockey Clubs Winter fixture was staged under an almost cloudless sky and bright sunshine. When early patrons of Wingatui arrived at The scene of action the countryside wore' a white mantle and it was not until long after noop that the frosty conditions melted away. The track was again somewhat holding and somewhat worn, but it withstood the strain of late season racing particularly well. It was a great day for Southland owners, as horses from the home province accounted for six races and three minor placings were credited to the southern brigade if Salmo Salar can be included as a locally-bred contestant. After a lengthy run of disappointments Mr W. T. Hazlett’s colours were in the ascendant and three of his four horses competing at the fixture, Taramoa, Apache and Lucky Light, won races, the last-named pair securing the open flat event double of the afternoon. A pleasing feature of the proceedings was the double cross-country success of Taramoa and Snowfall, both of whom were bred in Southland and represented southern owners.

The Tahuna Steeplechase speculation yielded a limited pool of £760 10/-, as against £2678 10/- last year. Red Heather was first in demand carrying 46 chances more than French Fleet (A. S. Ellis) with Kuku (E. Mackie) 20 tickets off in third place, 51 supporters in front of Koremata.

The field followed Red Heather and Taramoa at the first fence, then French Fleet moved into second place. When the straight -was reached Koremata was first over the stand double from Red Heather, French Fleet, Taramoa and Wairio in order. At the sod wall Kuku (E. Mackie) fell. Koremata led to the back, where Red Heather (L. Hunt) came to grief. Approaching the far turn French Fleet galloped to the front, just leading Wairio, then came Koremata and Taramoa ip company. Racing to the turn Wairio took charge from French Fleet, with Taramoa closing up and Koremata fourth. At the last fence French Fleet (A. S. Ellis) fell. Wairio was clear on the flat but Taramoa (G. Dempster) came on well under pressure and got up to win by a head from Wairio (J. Walker), with . Koremata (T. Smith) eight lengths off third, while Kaikahu (D. QlConnor)' was sixty yards away fourth, then came Koremata, Rag Tag and Mataipuke at intervals. The Invercargill-owned Taramoa had to be hunted along to get into the firing line at the finish and his weight and superior condition enabled him to get up on the flat and beat Wairio. The third horse, Koremata, ran an improved race, but there was little merit-in his placing except that he jumped well, Wairio paid a very useful price for second place.

There was a pool of £1955 on the Aidworth Handicap as compared with £3440 last year. Hounslow (J. Barry) was sent out as first fancy carrying S 3 chances more than Ravine (H. Young) with Night Maid 65 tickets away in third place only three supporters in advance of Salmo Salar (F. J. McKay), while Thurso (Woolford) was very close up in fifth demand. From a good start in front of the stands Sentinel Lad was first to show out from Ravine and Thurso. Going to the back Ravine had taken charge to lead well clear from Thurso. Rounding the far turn Ravine was still showing the way, while Fair Exchange was in second place, then came Sentinel Lad, Thurso, Leading Boy and Dumblane. At the home turn Ravine was holding his own and he remained in command to the distance where Night Maid and then Salmo Salar came out of a close-running field. Carrying on strongly Night Maid ran to the front just inside the distance with Salmo Salar putting in a sustained run. A keefa race home resulted in Night Maid (A. E. Ellis) lasting long enough to win by a head from Salmo Salar (F. J. McKay), with Ravine (H. Young) a length off third, half a length in front of Thurso, then came Dumblane, Miss Marco and Tembroney.

Speculation on the leading flat race of the day was of a limited character and the pool was' hoisted at £1927 10/-, as compared with £l9BO last season. Black Duke (P. Powell) was first fancy carrying 105 chances more than Full Feather (J. Barry) with Camisader (J. Dooley) 212 tickets off in third berth, 15 supporters better off than Taboo, who was 15 followers in advance of Apache, while Red Sea (L. J. Ellis) and Rin Tin Tin (J. Andrews) also commanded admirers. The field ran in an unbroken line from the barrier for a short distance then Rin Tin Tin and Caterpillar broke the order. At the seven furlong mark and later on Caterpillar had charge from Rin Tin Tin, Circulation, Black Duke, Stealth, Camisader and Apache. Always galloping strongly Caterpillar led across the top from Rin Tin Tin, with Apache moving up. Turning into the straight Caterpillar was galloping very strongly and looked to have a great chance below the distance, but then weakened as Rin Tin Tin led to the distance. Here Apache moved up, while Taboo came into the picture. Drawing out inside the distance Apache (C. Pope) battled on to win by threequarters of a length from Taboo (B. Brodie) with Rin Tin Tin (J. Andrews) a neck off third, half a length in front of Red Sea (L. J. Ellis) who came fast in the run home. Glenrowan (T. Metcalf) was fifth, then came Full Feather (J. Barry), who was never in the hunt, followed by Black Duke (P. Powell). Favoured by his light weight and having recovered from his seizure of the previous' evening Apache asserted himself at the distance from a favourable position and won cleverly, very nicely handled by the stable apprentice C. Pope. Taboo, who has the reputation of being a good galloper in sticky going, came fast in the straight to finish in second place and display the best form he has displayed for some time past. Rin Tin Tin ran a very solid race and well deserved his minor placing. Camisader was never in the limelight and Black Duke raced disappointingly. .

A pool of £1449 10/- compared badly with the return of £3608 for the Greenfield Hurdle Handicap last season. Craigmore (D. O’Connor) was most in demand to carry 21 chances more than Heather Lad, with Paris (0. Dempster) 228 tickets off. in third place four supporters in front of Troilus (J. T. Humphris), while Antrim Boy was seven followers away in fifth demand, and there was fair request for Pangolin (F. Thompson). Antrim Boy at once raced to the front from Heather Lad, then Pangolin moved into second place. However, when the contestants jumped the grandstand fence Antrim Boy was in charge from Heather Lad, then came Pangolin and Oriflamb, with Paris in the rear. The order was the same turning into the back stretch, but Oriflamb closed up into third berth nearing the far turn. Antrim Boy led across the top and was first to- clear the final obstacles from Heather Lad and Oriflamb. On the flat Heather Lad (FI. Anderton) fought on in determined fashion to outstay Oriflamb (E. Mackie) and beat him by a short half length, with Antrim Boy (W. Cooper) over a length off third, then, five lengths away,

came Troilus (J. T. Humphris) and Pangolin (F. Thompson). At the first fence in the straight shortly after the start Craigmore nearly came down and dropped his rider (D. O’Connor). Paris jumped badly throughout and performed as if he lacked hurdling experience, a fact previously , referred to by those best acquainted with his preparation. The success of Heather Lad was well deserved and was greeted with a round of applause. The. ancient Orifiamb ran a good race, but the-win-ner had the advantage when it came to a run to the judge on the flat.

The pool for the Empire Handicap ranked as £2308 10/-, compared with £2050 last season. Inevitable (B. Brodie) was first fancy carrying 305 chances more than Lucky Light, with Great Star (R. J. Rickerby) 263 tickets away in third place 150 supporters in front of Full I'ling (L. J. Ellis), but Black Duke (P. Powell) and Palermo were also in demand.

There was some delay at the post owing to Lucky Light backing in to the barrier. The tapes lifted to a good start, but Great Star and Lucky Light, in that order, were slow- to get away. Miss Redowa led out from Full Fling, Caterpillar and Inevitable. At the far turn Palermo had- taken charge from Great Star, First Raid and Inevitable. At this stage Inevitable dropped back to the bunch having apparently met with trouble. Crossing the top and rounding for home Palermo was in front from Miss Redowa, while Lucky Light was coming fast from behind. At the distance Palermo looked to be a winner, but Lucky Light came fast on the outside and beat him by a neck, with Black Duke threequarters of a length away third, then came First Raid, Miss Redowa, and Inevitable. The winning southern representative, after being close up in several races of late, at last secured her success by running wide on the home run, but she was the cause of some delay at the start and well-behaved horses had to stand cold. The consistent juvenile Palermo, galloped well, but could not withstand the finishing run of a brilliant performer like Lucky Light. At the home turn Miss Redowa was prominent, but failed in the home stretch, while First Raid came on well into fourth place. Black Duke was slow to conic into prominence over the first three furlongs, but was staying on in the straight. Inevitable’s chance was spoiled at the far turn, where he was checked and knocked back. Full Fling displayed early pace, but weakened before the run to the judge commenced.

The Dunedin Steeplechase was responsible for a limited pool of £1253, as against £4329 10/- last season. Top Gear was always first in order of selection to carry 421 chances more than Radiate, with Snowfall 51 tickets off in third place, with a substantial drop to Nightraid (J. T. Humphris) and Parader (E. Mackie) who were on even terms.

Radiate was first to show out, but Top Gear headed him off at the far side double. Top Gear led Radiate, Snowfall, Parader andt'Nightraid in that order over the water. When the stand double was reached Top Gear held a slight advantage, with Radiate, Parader and Snowfall in close order next, while Nightraid had retired to. the back. All jumped the sod wall safely with Radiate leading to the back. At the double on the far side Top Gear jumped away from Radiate, while Snowfall was close up. Top Gear was first to the water, but. racing to the last fence Snowfall closed on him and was first to land on -the flat. In the run home Snowfall (V. Langford) easily held his own to win by two and a half lengths from Radiate (A. E. Ellis), with Top Gear (W. Cooper) half a length off third, and Parader threequarters of a length off fourth, while Nightraid was some distance away last.

The winner, who has been racing into form since his Easter appearance at Riverton, gallooed and jumped well throughout. When called upon for an effort racing to the last obstacle he moved up fast and comfortably to score easily in the run home. The son of Balboa may be improved in condition and if so should race well in August at Riccarton in the event of his owner electing to pay a visit to Canterbury with his representative. The reputedly unsound Radiate did not jump too well at several fences but on the flat carried too many guns for the favourite. Top Gear, who "found 11.3 a load in holding going.

The Domain Handicap speculation resulted in a pool of £2334 10/-, against £640 10/- last season. Arrow Maid, was elected first favourite, carrying 345 chances more than Meitui, with Jock o’ Hazeldean fourteen tickets away in third place, well clear of Tuku, who was fourth in demand.

From an even walk-in start Arrow Maid quickly took charge attended by Tuku and MeitHi. As Arrow Maid led Tuku and Meitui up the hill Jock o’ Hijzeldean was closing up. Tuku was in front at the home turn from Arrow Maid, with Jock o’ Hazeldean tliird, followed by Meitui. At the distance Jock 0’ Hazeldean (B. Brodie) joined the leaders and went on to win nicely by a length from Meitui (J. Dooley), with Arrow Maid (J. W. Jennings) threequartera of a length off third, a similar, distance in front of Stringbow (L. J. Ellis), then came Captivate (J. Andrews) and Tuku (C. McCarthy). In the hands of a strong horseman Jock o’ Hazledean ran a good race and despite swerving in on Arrow Maid and .thus slightly interfering with Meitui in the straight, he won very easily for the absent owner, Mr J. M. Samson.

A disastrous day for northern backers undoubtedly affected the volume of speculation on the final event, the Farewell Handicap, and the pool only amounted to £2967, as compared with £4710 10/- last season. The Canterbury-owned three-year-old, Ranelagh, was sent out a warm first selection to carry 834 chances more than Red Boa, with John Bradbury (A. E. Didham) 266 tickets away in third place, 170 supporters clear of Smithereens (J. Barry), but Royal Game (L. Woolford), Rascal (T. Metcalf) and the coupled Nedda (F. Ingram) and Sudden Storm (A. Eastwood) were also followed staunchly. Royal Game, Martis and Red Boa were first to emerge from an even despatch and an unbroken line to race down the back. At the far turn Martis was showing the way to Red Boa, while Smithereens, who was slow to move, was acting as whipper-in to the field. Racing up the hill and rounding into the home stretch Red Boa was in charge from Ranelagh and Sudden Storm, while Royal Game was also in the firingline. Galloping on the rails, Red Boa (L. J. Ellis) was first to the judge to win by two lengths from Ranelagh (B. Brodie), with Sudden Storm (A. Eastwood) half a length away in third place, three-quarters of a length in advance of Royal Game. The success of Red Boa was very popular in southern turf circles as it was generally understood that his lady owner, Mrs E. Andrews, had been unlucky with Miss Redowa earlier in the meeting, and also because it gave the Invercargill trainer T. E. Pankhurst his second win of the occasion, Night Maid having recorded a victory for his stable in the Aidworth Handicap in an earlier event, when the daughter of imported Night Raid won well over a mile and a quarter and assisted in building up her sire’s reputation as a horse capable of begetting stayers. The juvenile Ranelagh put up a stout fight, but he proved unequal to conceding weight and two years to Red Boa. Sudden Storm galloped on well into third berth, and Royal Game registered his third very consistent appearance at the gathering by finishing in fourth position.

B. BRODIE SUSPENDED.

CROSSING IN DOMAIN HANDICAP.

(Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, June 4.

After the Domain Handicap at Wingatui to-day an inquiry was held concerning crossing by the winner, Jock o’ Hazeldean in the straight. The Judicial Committee held that the incident did not. affect the result of the race, and allowed the placings to stand, but suspended B. Brodie, the rider, for a month.

Three young Hoylake bricklayers are reported- to have drawn Diolite in the Calcutta Sweep. The father of one of them bought a dozen tickets and the son said two pals wanted tickets, so his little sister drew them from a hat. A syndicate of bookmakers have offered £12,500 for a halfshare.

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TODAY. . (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 4. The following are the acceptances for the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting:— . SECOND HUNT CLUB CUP STEEPLECHASE, £4OO. About two and a-half miles.

PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. COURSE IN HEAVY ORDER. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, June 4. Rain has fallen steadily fb-day and the course will be heavy for the second day to-morrow of the Auckland winter meeting. Of the original field in the Great Northern Steeplechase, Star Comet, Elysianor and Airtight have been withdrawn, and Kamehameha will probably take on the hurdles. Omeo is a doubtful runner so that the field in this big event may not number more than eight or nine. There are a dozen in the opening event, the Hunt Club Cup, and on the first day s form, there should be support for several namely, Mashoor, Penny Plain, Lucess, St. Warrigal, Marita, Freyja and Copeny. Penny Plain and Nukutere will be bracketed. The final summing up in this and other events is given further on. There is a large field of 26 engaged in the Ranfurly Handicap and yesterday's backers of Sir Mond will be justified in going for a recovery if the going is not too bad. Goldlike went well yesterday and a likely newcomer is On Top. Others favoured are Valreina, Royal Visitor, Principal, Snow Prince, Currajong, Maurieana, ■Catoma, New Boy and Valreina. Perhaps the best four will be Sir Mond, On Top, Valreina and Catoma. The last-named was slow out of the barrier yesterday and then went a good race.

There are half a dozen in the Remuera Hurdles and with Mister Gamp engaged, there will be the keenest interest taken in the contest. The topweight will go exceedingly well if the ground is not too bad. This promises to be one of the most interesting races of the day, for with Taumai and Prince Lu to set a torrid pace, the result of such tactics are fraught with great possibilities. Mister Gamp, Taumai and Prince Lu may fight it out.

So far as the Great Northern Steeplechase is concerned, the position is unchanged. Omeo was worked this morning and it is a question of whether his interrupted preparation will prejudice his chances. If he runs—and such is likely to be the case under present conditions—the race should see staged a keen tussle between Matu, Roman Abbey and Ponjola. The number of’ acceptors for the principal flat event, the seven furlongs King George Handicap, is smaller than usual, eleven only being left in. Havering ran a fine race yesterday in the sprint, finishing close up to the placed horses and Eager Rose was thereabouts in the same race, in fact they were fourth and seventh respectively. Gold Money won handsomely yesterday and if the extra furlong does not bother her, she may do it again. Barometer must be fancied now the tracks are becoming heavy. His showing in the Cornwall Handicap was promising. Flying Prince will have the conditions to his liking, and High Pitch is susceptible to improvement. Lucy Rose was unlucky yesterday and tomorrow she should be right in the fighting line. Those on the minimum are not greatly impressive. It looks as if the three at the head of the handicap, Havering, Eager Rose and Gold Money and Lucy Rose will be in keen demand.

King’s Jest, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles has a big proposition in front of him to carry 12.5 to victory in the Hack Hurdles event. However, the opposition is poor and he may.be good enough to head them. Quincoma at one stage looked likely to catch Taumai yesterday in the Penrose Hurdles when he fell, and on the strength of that showing, he may offer most opposition to the topweight. Kairuri, which was second, is well treated, and he may be the best outside this pair. Air Laddie will be at a short price in the concluding race, the Fitzroy Handicap, and this is to be expected after his narrow defeat by Chromadyne. Catoma, if kept for this, may be a nuisance to him, for this hack went a fine race yesterday, and if reserved may take a good deal of beating. Outside this pair, those liked most are Royal Visitor, Currajong, Snow Prince, Micrometer, Helium and Operatic. H. Gray will probably ride the last-named. HUNT CLUB CUP.—Penny Plain, Mashoor, Lucess. RANFURLY HANDICAP.—Sir Mond, Catoma, On Ton. REMUERA HURDLES.—Mister Gamp, Taumai, Prince Lu. GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE. —Mato, Roman Abbey, Ponjola. APPEAL DISALLOWED. PLACES ALTERED IN RACE. (Per United Press Association.) o Auckland, June 4. An appeal against the decision of the Auckland District Committee in reversing the placings in the Waipa Handicap run at Whangarei on April 4 was lodged with the New Zealand Racing Conference by S. G. Lindsay and W. Allen junr., the owners of Owairaka and the appeal was heard by the Racing Conference judges, Messrs O. S. Watkins, W. McA. Duncan and J. H. Perrett in Auckland this morning. The facts are that Owairaka finished ' first and Sea Cob, owned by W. Montgomery, second. An inquiry was held by the Judicial Committee of the Whangarei Racing Club after the race into the alleged interference by K. Gill the rider of Owairaka with R. S.
