A GROWING EVIL

DRINKING BY WOMEN

(Per United Press Association.)

Aucklan.d June 4.

When the chairman of the Auckland Licensing Committee to-day remarked that police reports on hotels contained reference to drinking by women, Sub-Inspector Lauder said there was nothing to show that young women were frequenting hotels. He had had the convictions for a year analysed and only one woman under 21 had been convicted.

The chairman said no doubt it was a growing evil. The general prohibition of the supply of liquor to women might not have public support, but if the committee was informed that any hotel made a special business of supplying women it would deal with the licensee.
