Wellington, June 4. ■ The Shops and Offices Act Investigation Committee continued its sittings at Parliament Buildings to-day. The New Zealand Association of Restauranteurs, Pastrycooks and Confectioners tendered evidence, supplementing that given at a previous sitting approving of a provision requiring restaurant keepers to provide transport facilities for female workers if*required at work after 10.30 p.m. The combined Wellington florists and the New Zealand Florists Exchange repeated a request previously made by the New Zealand Horticultural Trades Association for six o’clock closing on four days of the week, and five o’clock closing on Saturdays, and the prohibition of the sale of‘cut flowers after these hours.

- Weekly newspaper publishers asked foij the continuation of the present definition of “newsagent” and definitely opposed the proposal to require shops selling weekly papers to close at 5.30 p.m. The Retail Drapers’ Association asked for the retention of the present hours for shops, but desired to see these hours definitely fixed by the Act and the power of fixing closing hours taken from the Court of Arbitration.

A representative deputation of wholesale manufacturers and distributors of ice cream confectionary and aerated waters, asked that no restriction be placed on the sale of goods dealt in by them. The deputation also asked that the provision of the Poljce Offences Act be amend'ed to allow of the sale of fruit, confectionary and refreshments for consumption either on or off the premises on Sundays.
