Mrs Matheson is spending a few days at Orepuki as the guest of Mrs Mirrielees. Mrs W. G. Coulter is visiting friends at Hokonui. Mrs Forde is the guest of the Rev. and Mrs W. H. Howes. Visitors to the Dunedin Winter Show from this district include: Mr and Mrs C. Affleck (Grassy Creek), Mr and Mrs Teviotdale (Isla Bank), Mr and Mrs Gaitts (Fairfax), Mr and Mrs W. Forde (Isla Bank), Mr and Mrs W. .1. A. McGregor (Mount Linton), Mr and Mrs W. Kennedy (“Studleigh,” Otautau), Miss M. Pears (Etalvale), Mr and Mrs W. Lindsay (Wallacetown), Mr and Mrs W. Porteous, Mrs J. G. C. Baker, Misses Gould, Ryan and Finnegan (Otautau). On the eve of her approaching marriage Miss M. Brown was tendered a kitchen evening by the residents of the district, the function being held in the Waikouro School, the building being taxed to its utmost capacity. Dancing was indulged in to capital music supplied by Mrs 11. and Mr A. Beange (violins) and Mrs Muir (accordeon), while extras were played by Messrs Hawthorn and 0 Brien. Mr I'. Crane officiated as M.C. A song was also contributed by Mr J. O’Brien, wnich was greatly appreciated. After supper Mr J. Muir, in a congratulatory speech, asked Miss Brown to accept the many gifts with the good wishes of all for a happy time in the future. Mr Cowan supported these remarks, and referred in eulogistic terms to the good qualities of Miss Brown and Mr J. (Houston. The latter suitably responded. “For they are jolly good fellows” was heartily sung, after which dancing was resumed and continued until an early hour in the morning. Mesdames John Crawford and W. Ayson (Waikaka) have returned after a motor trip through the Lillburn Valley. Mr and Mrs A. D. Mclvor, South Riverton, are spending a few days in Dunedin. Mrs Robinson is visiting her daughter, Mrs Beange, The Highlands. Misses McKay, of Timaru, are visiting friends at the seaside.

The fortnightly card tournament was held in the Gummies Bush hall on Monday evening when, despite the unfavourable weather, there was a good attendance. Mrs J. McLean won the ladies’ prize, and Mr Rankin the men’s. Mrs T. Molloy and Mr W. Hopcroft annexed the minor ones. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Rankin, Mr and Mrs Pankhurst, Mr and Mrs J. Hamlin, Mr and Mrs T. Molloy, Mr and Mrs Hopcroft, Mesdames W. Mrs W. J. Winton is spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs Hall, Tisbury. The band euchre held on Thursday evening, attracted a good attendance. Mrs W. J. Winton scored in the ladies’ section, with Miss Wright filling second place. Mr W. Trembath was first in the men’s division, Mr Cowan being second. Miss Woodward scored the hidden number prize. Miss Angus, after a visit to Mr and Mrs A. D. Angus, has returned to Dunedin. There was a good attendance at the "Wembley Dance on Tuesday evening. Music was supplied by Mr E. Hunter (cornet), Mrs Hunter (violin) and Miss Green (piano). Stirling, Bickley (2). A most enjoyable evening was spent at Mrs Hopwood's residence on Tuesday when she entertained a few friends at a euchre evening. Mrs Hodge carried off the first prize. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Hodge, Trembatii, Winton, Spencer, Cowan, J. D. McLean, Hopwood, Misses Woodward, Hopwood (2). Plairt and Fancy Dress Ball.

This ball was a huge success and the Empire Theatre, Riverton, was filled to overflowing. The door receipts were well over the sum .of £5O.

The hall was most artistically decorated and the lighting effects were highly praised by all present. Many thanks are due to Messrs A. Mann and I. Cooke for their invaluable help in decorating and lighting the haii.

• Mr and Mrs J. W. Smith (Invercargill) judaed the fancy' costumes. The Canadian Three Step Competition was well patronised and Mr J. Comber, of the Green Mill, most ably narrowed the competitors down to six. The final was judged by public vote. After supper Mirs Mclvor rendered an acrobatic dance which was well received. The euchre parties promoted by the Rover Basketball Club continue to be very popular. Seventeen tables were occupied on Monday evening. Mrs Adam Baird and Mr I. Agnew both won a pair of slippers, the former with 22 points and the latter with 24 points. Supper was followed by a short dance, music for which was rendered by Miss M. Balch (piano) and Mr W. Mrs Campbell and Miss Cantrick, Dipton, visited Mrs W. H. Campbell last week. Miss G. Wilson, of the Teachers’ Training College, Dunedin, is home on holidays. Mrs Driscoll, Taramoa, visited Mrs M. Reilly last week. Mrs M. Sheehan is returning from the North Island this week. Visitors to Dunedin for the show include: Mr and Mrs T. Cosgrove, Messrs T. King, M. J. Forde, W. Swale and C. M. Lindsay. Miss Margaret Kerse was a passenger for Dunedin yesterday. The Winton Basketball Club held a highly successful sale of produce on Saturday. Mrs Scobie won the dinner and Mrs R. Balch, jnr., the cake. About fifty people gathered at the home of Mr and Mrs John Burgess, Benmore, which was the scene of much festivity on Thursday evening, the‘occasion being the coming of age of their daughter Annie. The spacious dining room was gaily decorated with coloured streamers and balloons. Excellent music for the dance was provided by Miss Clark, Lochiel, and Mr Shuttleworth, Benmore. Non-dancers whiled away the evening with cards and games. Mr P. Laing played a selection on the bagpipes and songs were rendered by Miss Clark and Mr Mitchell. Mr Martin presented Miss Burgess with a key. Miss Jean Burgess and Mr Harry Burgess motored from Mokotua to be present at the celebrations.

On Wednesday, May 21, Mrs G. Wadworth, Otapiri, gave a delightful gift afternoon in honour of Miss Molly Henderson, who is to be married shortly. During thc afternoon competitions and a musical monologue contributed by Miss M. B. Cowie were very much enjoyed. A delicious afternoon tea was dispensed after which Mrs Wadworth, on behalf of those present, asked Miss Henderson to accept an array of beautiful gifts. Miss Henderson suitably replied and the afternoon drew to a close with the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

Op Tuesday Mrs Woodford Rouse, Otapiri, was hostess at a handkerchief afternoon given in honourof Miss Molly Henderson. Novel competitions created a great deal of amusement for the twenty guests who were present. Tea was served in the dining room which was beautifully decorated with chrysanthemums. Miss Henderson’s friends had a further opportunity of expressing their good wishes on Friday when Mrs W. E. Henderson, Otapiri, gave an evening in honour of the bride elect.

Last Wednesday the secondary department of the. Winton District High School hold a social evening in the Masonic Hall. Dancing, games and competitions provided no end of fun. Mrs M. G. McArthur played for the dance. Competitions were won by Mrs McArthur, Misses 0. Larnach, M. Mcllwrick, Masters B. Lilico, I. Gilmour and E. Hogg. An excellent supper was handed round by the girls. McHugh came first, winning half a dozen stainless knives, and Mr Thomson, who received a pair of silk socks, second. A short dance was held after supper. Mr C. Grant acted as M.C. and Mrs W. J. Cowie supplied the music. The next tournament will be held to-night. The monthly meeting of the Winton Branch of the Phinket Society held in the Rest. Room on Saturday was attended by the president, Mrs J. A. Broom, and Mesdames W. H. King, T. S. Smith, J. R. Hamilton, J. Walsh, D. F. O’Malley, M. Driscoll, M. Reilly, J. Henderson, W. Horsburgh, G. Cowan and J. Bryce. Apologies were received for the absence of Mesdames P. Bradley, G. Davis, W. Hamilton and W. 11. Thomson. £3 15/- was received from the MacKinnon Trust Fund. The nurse’s report for the month showed that 34 homes had been visited, 89 adults, 74 babies, 12 older children had visited the Plunket rooms, 11 new cases had been received and there were at present 375 children under supervision. A few accounts were passed for payment. Miss Mary Stewart, Rimu, has returned home, after a holiday spent in Lochiel and Dipton.

Mrs Cowan, who had been on a visit to the Misses Mac Gibbon, East Gore, has returned to Winton.

Mr and Mrs D. Mac Gibbon, Orawia, have been staying with the Misses Mac Gibbon, East Gore. Miss Stokes (Dunedin) is on a visit to Mrs R. G. Stokes, Irk street. Miss Kathleen O’Connor gave a most enjoyable dance in the Gaiety Hall on Wednesday evening of last week the occasion being her 21st birthday. The Gaiety Hall presented a bright scene on Friday evening of last week when the Timaru High School boys, of Gore, Max and Keith Fleming, Russell and Graham Aitken, Jack Matthews, Fred Wallis, Jack Edwards, Tom Milne, and Norman Mcr Creath gave a most successful dance. Among the many young people present were Kathleen O’Connor, Rachel Gresham, Mary Cooper, Francis Dunlop, Barbara Oswin, Jessie Paterson, M. A delightful bridge party was held in the Gaiety Hall on Thursday evening of last week when the hostesses included Mrs J. E. Rogers and Miss Gibbs. Bowls of chrysanthemums added charm and decoration to the room while the supper tables were effectively decorated with chrysanthemums, violets and maiden hair fern. Miss G. Wilson, Balclutha Hospital staff, is at present visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. A. Wilson, senr., Ferry street. Mr and Mrs M. McLeod, Edendale, were visitors to Winton during the week. Mrs W. A, Berry and Miss Ruth Berry, Queenstown, were visitors to Wyndham during the .week as the guests of Mrs Simpson, "Bon Accord.” Miss E. K. Wilson, Dunedin, is at present visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. A. Wilson, .senr., Ferry street, Wyndham. Miss G. Ayres, Invercargill, who has been on a visit to Mrs W. Barnett, Wyndham, left on Saturday for Queenstown. Mrs Coleman, Ferry street, Wyndham, who has been spending a holiday in the north, has returned home.

Miss- F. McEwan, Wyndham, is at present spending a holiday at Dipton. Miss Latjrie Humphries; College, Dunedin, is at present on a visit to Mr and Mrs O. Patterson, Alma street, Wyndham. Mr and Mrs A. Cameron, Mataura Island, were visitors to Winton during the week. Miss Bickerdike, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Robertson, Balaclava street, has left for Dunedin. Mr and Mrs E. C. Walker, Malta street, are at present visiting Dunedin, They arc accompanied by their young son Russell. Mr and Mrs W. Frame, Wyndham, are at present visiting Dunedin and Oamaru. McDonald, Wyndham, is-at present visiting relations at Mataura. Mrs W. Scott, Wyndham, who has been visiting the north, returned home on Saturday. Kitchen Evening. On Monday evening a pleasant function took place at the home of Mr and Mrs K. McLennan, “Riverslca,” Wyndham, when Miss Mavis McLennan, who is to be married this week, was the guest of honour at a kitchen evening. There was a large gathering of neighbours and friends, and altogether a most enjoyable time was spent in dancing in the barn, excellent music being supplied by Mrs J. E. McKay, “Ardoc.h,” Wyndham, Messrs John Brand, John Winn and A. Gregory. Mr S. Stewart was a capable and efficient M.C. For those who did not wish to dance card tables were set in the cosy dining room at the house. Prior to supper being served Mr Jos. Hunter, on behalf of the visitors, asked Miss McLennan’s acceptance of the large and assorted array of useful kitchen utensils, and in doing so referred to the many fine qualities of the popular young guest of honour. In conclusion, he wished her health, wealth and prosperity in her future life. Mrs J. D. Hopkins, a near neighbour, also spoke, while endorsing remarks were added by Mr S. Shaw. Mr T. Fenton suitably replied on behalf of Miss McLennan, thanking everybody for their kindly remarks and presents. Before dispersing Mr Hunter thanked the musicians for their assistance and Mr and Mrs McLennan for the use of their home for the function. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” terminated a most enjoyable evening. Church Sale of Work. The Presbyterian Church annual sale of work and produce was terminated on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance present, and good business was carried out. During the evening items were contributed by Mrs Ferguson (Glenham), Master H. Munro (Wyndham), Misses Annie Shaw and Allison Allan (Wyndham), Miss Jeannie Cook (South Wyndham), Mr W. Hansen (Wyndham), Misses Jean and Isabel Howe (South Wyndham). Social Evening.

On Saturday evening a social family gathering was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs P. Walsh, Menzies Ferry, the occasion being the birthday of Mrs Walsh and her twin-brother, Mr W. Casey, Dunedin. The evening was spent in dancing and euchre. Songs during the evening were rendered by Misses I. Tither and M. Walsh, Mrs Walsh and Mr J. Walsh, recitation by Miss W. Columb (Gore). A feature of the evening was the birthday cake decorated with G 3 candles. Among those present were Mesdames Casey and Bell (Dunedin), Columb (Gore), Casey, Tither, Walsh, Misses E. Cas’ey, W. Columb, D. O’Sullivan (Dunedin), M. Casey (East Chatton), Tither (2), Walsh (2), Messrs W., P. and J. Casey, A. Bell (Dunedin), J. Casey (Milburn), E. Casey, E. Casey (East Chattori), J. Casey (Gore), F. Casey, Peter Casey, J. Fenton, Tither (2), J. Walsh (Invercargill) and Walsh (3).
