'“ BEAUTIFUL WEATHER EXPERIENCED. INTERESTING JUMPING AND FLAT RACES. (Special to the Times.) Dunedin, June 3. The second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting was conducted under ideal weather conditions for the month of June with not a cloud in the sky when the first race came up for decision and never an adverse breath of air to annoy during the proceedings. There was a holiday attendance and it was noticeable that many visitors from inland Otago districts who were not in evidence on Saturday made a belated appearance at the fixture. The track was somewhat more holding than on the opening day but it was still in excellent winter condition for flat racing and jumping contests. The fields were numerically strong throughout and this fact was responsible for quite a number of people deciding to spend their holiday leave at Wingatui. For the Forbury Steeplechase Handicap the pool was a moderate one at £1660, as compared with £3595 last season. In a close wagering contest between three horses Double Soult (A. S. Ellis) was sent out first in order of selection to carry 87 chances more than Kaikahu (A. J. Peart) with French Fleet 19 tickets off in third place, while Rag Tag was also fancied. From a good start Rag Tag just showed out from Wairio as the field rounded the far turn and raced in close order to the water, with Taramoa in the rear. At the stand double Rag Tag led from French Fleet, then came Wairio and Kaikahu. All cleared the sod wall safely but at the obstacle on the hillside Rag Tag (A. Youngson) lost his jockey. As the field crossed over to the course proper Kaikahu fell on the flat and brought down Taramoa (D. Dempster), while Double Soult was seriously interfered with. At this stage Wairio and French Fleet were racing together in command, the latter gaining slightly at the fence. At the water Wairio did the best work and showed the way to the final obstacle from French Fleet, with Parader some distance off third. On the flat Wairio (J. Walker) easily held his own to win by four lengths from French Fleet, with Parader (E. Mackie) a bare length off third, while Double Soult was sixty yards off in fourth place. The winner, who returned a very substantial price, raced like a promising horse in the making and wore French Fleet down over the last half mile. French Fleet raced as if he was feeliiig the effects of previous recent experiences. Parader stopped to a walk at a fence at the back and then put in a very fine run to narrowly miss second money. Kaikahu fell at the same spot where Radiate came to grief on the opening day. The winner ranks as a half-brother by Fleetham—Martian Nell to Snowfall. While there was strong speculation on the Silverstream Handicap the return of £3445 compared badly with £5017 last year. Impertinence was sent out first in demand, carrying 228 chances more than Palermo, with Hounslow 31 tickets off in third place, 25 supporters in advance of Ravine. From an even start Remindful was first to get her head in front of a line of runners. Rounding the far turn and racing across the top Remindful just showed from Hounslow, while Ravine and Sentinel Lad were close up from a bunch. Remindful was first to turn for home, but below the distance Palermo and then Impertinence challenged and headed her off, while Hounslow and Ravine were close up and finishing on. Drawing out at the distance, Impertinence (B. Brodie) strode away to win by two and a half lengths from Palermo (A. E. Ellis), with Ravine (A. Eastwood) half a length off third, a neck in front of Hounslow (W. Pascoe), Jock o’ Hazeldean was fifth, followed by Tembroney and Lucky Maid. The winner was always well placed and came away at the right end to win easily. Palermo, who was always well up by the way, ran a gallant race, but could make no impression on Impertinence ’over the last furlong. Ravine ran a good race and may do better in the near future with a drop in the weights. Hounslow was prominent throughout, and ran a solid race, but lacked final sprinting ability. Sentinel Lad (C. Brodie) was in the first force to the straight, but then weakened. Remindful found the distance over six furlongs slightly beyond her. Lucky Maid was slow to move, as usual, but was running on at the finish. Vinegrove (L. J. Ellis) was not sighted on the journey. Meitui and Bitractor did not get near the. leaders at any stage. For the Provincial Handicap the pool reached £4217 10/-, as against £3596 10/last season. Waterline was most in request, carrying 334 chances more than Black Duke (P. Powell), with Camisader 481 tickets off in third place, 266 supporters in front of Red Sea, with a big drop to Circulation and Black Mint (T. Metcalf). At the barrier Camisader was unsighted by the starter turned round on the outside and lost twenty lengths, while Money Mine was slow to move, and Black Duke also lost ground. Haze and Black Mint led out of the straight and showed the way to the back stretch from Evening, Circulation and Red Sea in close order. At the far turn Haze and Black Mint were still setting the pace, then came Evening, Waterline, Red Sea and Circulation. As Haze just showed the way to the home turn from Black Mint, Waterline could be seen putting in a claim, while Red Sea was in attendance. . Below the distance Haze was weakening and Black Mint then followed suit, with Evening putting in a claim. It was a fine race as the leaders passed the distance with Red Sea, Evening and Waterline in a row and Pink Note coming fast. A great finish resulted in Waterline (J. Barry) scoring by a short neck from Red Sea (L. J. Ellis) with Pink Note (B. Brodie \ a head away third, a head in front of Evening (A. Eastwood), then almost in line came Circulation (F. Ingram), followed by Wingatui (C. Brodie) and Black Duke, while Money Mine was last. Camisader reached the field at the back, but could not carry on.
Waterline proved himself a good three-year-old by carrying a big weight gallantly in sloppy going, covering some extra ground and winning like a stayer. Red Sea looked to have a great chance inside the distance but Waterline outstayed her in the last fifty yards. Pink Note came from a long way back to run a very, good race. Black Duke performed well considering that he was practically left at barrier rise. Evening raced well and was always well up to finish in fourth place being, narrowly cut out of the money. Money Mine raced as if he is not himself at present. Camisader was again very unlucky, as he had no chance whatever after being left. When the Otago Hurdle Handicap came up for decision the investments totalled £3336, as compared with £5,221 last season, Carinthia was first favourite, carrying 59 chances more than Amorist, with Troilus (J. T. Humphris) 315 tickets off in third place 15 supporters in advance of Craigmore .(D. O’Connor), but there were also strong followings for Antrim Boy, Heather Lad, and Gayoma. The field left the post in good line Gayoma and Amorist at once crowding on the pace to draw clear of Carinthia, while Troilus and Guncase dropped to the rear. There was little change to the straight, but at the stand obstacle Amorist was attended by Craigmore, then came Gayoma, Carinthia, Heather Lad and Antrim Boy. . Racing out of the straight and going to the
back Craigmore joined Amorist and the pair were eight lengths away from the field and jumping each fence beautifully, At the flight of hurdles near the six furlong post Gayoma struck heavily. At the far turn Amorist and Craigmore were still carrying on at a fast pace but Carinthia was commencing to move up steadily with the remainder well back. Climbing the hill Carinthia ran into second place and Heather Lad also improved his position. Approaching the final jump at the bottom of the straight Carinthia took charge. In the run home on the flat Carinthia (F. Thompson) had the race in safe keeping and went on to win by over three lengths from Amorist (G. Salt), with Heather Lad (11. Anderton) four lengths off third, a similar distance in front of Troilus, then came Antrim Boy (Cooper), Craigmore, and Gayoma (A. S. Ellis). The race was run at a very fast gait and Carinthia established a new track record of 3min 46secs, as compared with the figures of 3min 49 3-ssecs, established by Gamecock (12.9) in 1921. The winner scored with something in hand, and his task was made easier by the cut throat tactics adopted by Amorist and Craigmore. Heather Lad ran like an improving hurdler. Troilus made a useful run over the last half mile. Gayoma hit hard by the way and this mishap must have adversely affected his chance of getting some of the money. Guncase was never in the picture. There was heavy investment on the Wairongoa Handicap for a pool of £4430, as against £2839 last season. Inevitable was sent out first in demand carrying 387 chances more than Great Star, with Lucky Light 514 tickets oil in third place, 420 •supporters ahead of Rin Tin Tin (A. E. Ellis), while Full Fling (L. J. Ellis) and Smithereens (A. Eastwood) was also fancied. From an even start Great Star showed out momentarily, then Caterpillar dashed to the front to lead Great Star, Full Fling and Rin Tin Tin in close order. Smithereens was badly left and Tripaway was very slow to start, losing several lengths. Holding her own round the far turn and up the hill Caterpillar led to the bend and into the straight from Full Fling, Great Star, Inevitable and Rin Tin Tin, with Lucky Light moving up on the outside. Below the distance Red Boa put in a run. Sticking to her work Caterpillar (N. J. Dwyer) lasted long enough to win by threequarters of a length from the fast finishing Lucky Light (F. J. McKay) with Great Star (C. Emerson) half a length oft third, while Inevitable was fourth threequarters of a length further back a head in front of Red Boa (L. Woolford) then came Full Fling. The winner who was not a great deal fancied by her stable, although her owner was reported to have given her some chance, returned a very substantial price. Lucky Light, who drew number one at the barrier gave very little trouble and got fairly well off, but as customary of late she swung out at the home turn to put in a brilliant run in the centre of the track—a little further on and she would have won. Great Star again ran a fine race but was weakening over the latter stages. Inevitable did not get going as smartly as in several previous races and this fact was against him at the finish. Full Fling put in a bold claim, but the going was not in her favour and she faded out over the last one hundred and fifty yards. Red Boa came fast over the last two furlongs. For the Wingatui Steeplechase the pool was announced as £2,257 10/-, as compared with £5,323 10/- last season. Radiate was elected a very strong first fancy with A. E. Ellis in the saddle, carrying 1099 chances more than Nightmaid, with Kaikahu 238 tickets off in third place, but Snowfall also commanded a fairly* strong following. Snowfall was first to show out and led over the initial obstacle, then Kaikahu took charge from a close racing field. Crossing the water Kaikahu was showing the way to Snowfall and Radiate, then came Mataipuke and Nightraid. The order was the same at the stand double, but when the sod wall was reached Mataipuke (E. Mackie) came to grief. The rider escaped unhurt. Kaikahu always led up the back from Snowfall and Radiate. After crossing the post and rails at the far .turn Snowfall raced up to Kaikahu and drew out to lead over the water jump by four lengths. Racing to the final obstacle Radiate moved into second place. Holding his own at the final brush fence Snowfall (V. Langford) went on to win by five lengths, with Radiate (A. E. Ellis) beating Kaikahu (D. O’Connor) by two lengths for second place, while Nightraid (J. T. Humphris) was twenty lengths off in fourth berth. The winner, who stripped an improved horse since he competed at the Southland R.C.’s Winter meeting, was always well up and won easily afler jumping well by the way. He was unlucky on the first day and had a good chance in the Otago Steeplechase when stopped by the riderless Kaikahu. Radiate performed fairly well, but he did not jump with his usual proficiency and may have been feeling the effects of his fall on Saturday. Kaikahu failed to see the distance out after making the pace almost throughout. Nightraid could not pace it with the leaders. Snowfall returned a very nice price to the southerners who stood to him in view of his past promise. The Otau-tau-owned mare Martian Nell, by Martian, had thus to be credited with two winning sons during the day in Wairio and Snowfall. The Janefield Handicap attracted a pool of £3,988, as against £3,088 10/- last season. There was keen competition for the position of first favourite, but Miss Redowa eventually headed the quotations carrying seven chances more than Semper Paratus, with Fair Exchange (L. Moulin) 179 tickets off third, 142 supporters ahead of Arrow Maid, while there was strong backing for Miss Bradbury, Tuku and Captain’s Gift. There was some delay at the start caused by Fair Exchange and in a lesser degree by Miss Bradbury, Miss Redowa, Arrow Maid and Captivate. From a good line Tuku was first to break the line attended by Arrow Maid and Miss Redowa. At the far turn Arrow Maid led Fair Exchange, Tuhu, and Miss Redowa. When the home turn was reached Arrow Maid and Fair Exchange were on terms from Miss Redowa, Captivate and Semper Paratus. It was a keen race to the distance where Semper Paratus put in a claim to get on terms with Arrow Maid and Miss Redowa, while Fair Exchange also looked dangerous. Under strong pressure Semper Paratus (J. Barry) got up to' win by half a length from ArrowMaid (J. W. Jennings), with Miss Redowa (L. J. Ellis) a short neck off third, closely followed by Captivate (J. Andrews), who put in a late run, then came Fair Exchange. . e The winner put in a good finishing effort andi fairly worried Arrow Maid and Miss Redowa out of the major places. Fair Exchange weakened over ths final one hundred yards, but Captivate ran a good race into fourth place. The Invermay Handicap attracted a. pool of £5,018 compared with £6,737 last year. Ranelagh was elected first fancy, carrying 209 chances more than Full Feather (J. Barry) with Tardy (J. Dooley) 529 tickets away in third place, 560 supporters in front of Salmo Salar, but there was also support for Glenrowan (W. Cooper), Tabop (B. Brodie), Stealth (A. E. Didham), Royal Game (L. J. Ellis), First Raid and, Caterpillar. . • From an even start, Caterpillar rushed to the front to lead First Raid, Stealth and Nedda. When the first turn was reached, Caterpillar was still clear from First Raid, Stealth, Nedda, Taboo and Ranelagh, while Full Feather was last, three lengths away. As the field swung into the straight with Caterpillar showing the way, First Raid, Nedda, Stealth, Royal Game, Ranelagh and Salmo Salar were all in the fighting line while Full Feather was coming fast from the rear with a lot of ground to cover on the outside. It was a fine contest to the distance where Salmo Salar forged his way to the leaders. Here Full Feather’s name was called, but he failed to continue his run. Battling out the issue in rare fashion, Salmo Salar (F. Ingram) stayed best to win by a length and a half-from Ranelagh (A. Eastwood) with Royal Game (L. J. Ellis) a short neck off third, closely pursued by First Raid. Then came Taboo and Glenrowan.
It was noticeable that Caterpillar, Stealth and Nedda did not stay on. Prior to the race, Apache developed what appeared to be a kidney seizure and had to be scratched. His name was withdrawn from the totalisator. The success of the Southland bred Salmo Salar was well received as he has been racing very consistently of late, narrowly losing several races. Ranelagh was not well placed at the home turn and had to put in a fine run to reach second place. Royal Game ran a good race, but he was not quite good enough. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, June 3. The weather was fine, but bitterly cold for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie to-day. There was a good attendance and the going was soft, 'lhe totalisator handled £96,644 10/- against £69,103 on the first day last year, being on a Saturday which was not a general holiday. R. Syme was given the mount on King’s Jest in the Great Northern Hurdles halt an hour before the race on account of E. Stanway being injured in the previous event. Syme's riding fee for this successful mount was £ll2 10/-. Sir Mond was a hot proposition at odds on for the first division of the Jervois Handicap, but fourth was the best he could do. Chromadyne, fourth favourite at a fine price, carried his big impost well and scored handsomely. Chromadyne got away best, but was steadied after a couple of. furlongs and Catulus led to the three furlongs. At the home turn. Air Laddie and Chromadyne, held command over Goldlike, Sir Mond, Catulus,- Catoma and Day Lass. There was a good tussle at the finish between Chromadyne and Air Laddie, the former getting a half length decision, with two lengths back to Principal, with Sir Mond right up fourth. The next were Currajong and Catoma, who did not get away too well, Roman Pearl, Brampton, Red Day, Goldlike, Day Lass and Patutahi. There was very even betting between Master Lu, Potoanui and Rahepoto in the Greenlane Steeplechase and the first-named won handsomely. It was not. his jumping that brought victory. St. Warrigal made the pace warm from the outset, but on the hill the last time, Master Lu was with him with Marita and Lucess fairly handy. Master Lu was first over the final obstacle and won by five lengths from Lucess with St. Warrigal three lengths back and Marita, Lucilius and Potoanui at good intervals. Rahepoto fell at the second fence. There was a close finish in the second division of the Jervois Handicap, Hannibal, Gay Cockade and Valreina going over the line in a heap. Hannibal was favourite, the betting taking a wide range and Gay Cockade was not paying twice as much as the winner. Gay Cockade and Valreina led into the straight from Royal Visitor, Snow Prince, Valcuir, Hannibal, Unoco (who was slow away) and Spring Abbey. Over the last bit, Hannibal did best and won by a head from Gay Cockade with Valreina another head away. Royal Visitor was fourth and Valcuir, Micrometer, Spring Abbey, Crishna, Neil, Unoco, The Sun and Grattus followed. The last-named met with interference early. Taumai spread-eagled Ins field in the Penrose Hurdles, giving nothing else a chance. He was a big favourite. Marble Mount and he went out fast, but the favourite then went away. Quincoma went after him, but fell at the second to last fence, Taumai going on. to win by fifteen lengths from Kairuri with Harbour View three lengths back and Rongo fourth. Sir Archie jumped badly and fell at the fourth hurdle. Great Northern Hurdles. Roman Abbey (£3,240), Mister Gamp (£2,289), Aurora Borealis (£2,123) and King’s Jest (£1,410) were backed for big money in the Great Northern Hurdles. Little pace was on over the early stages, but after Roman Abbey and King’s Jest took the last fence together, the latter stayed on better to score a fine victory. Daylight and Wako King had turns in the lead for the first mile and then Roman Abbey took up the running, leading past the stands the second time from Wako King, Mister Gamp, Aurora Borealis, Kamehameha, King’s Jest and Elysianor. Daylight and Elysianor fell at the fence opposite the Stewards’ stand. Running to the second to last fence, three and a-half furlongs from home, Roman Abbey, King’s Jest, Aurora Borealis and Mister Gamp were bunched and here the tiring Wako King fell and Mister Gamp, who was going strongly, toppled over him. Turning for home Roman Abbey and King’s Jest were four lengths in front of Aurora Borealis with Daylight half a furlong away, Kamehameha pulled up at the five furlongs. Roman Abbey and King's Jest rose at the final fence in line, and an the flat they raced for nearly half a furlong before King’s Jest began to assert himself, and forging ahead, he won by three lengths. Aurora Borealis was fifteen lengths farther back and Daylight over a hundred yards behind the third horse, these being the only ones to finish. Roman Abbey did well and will be in big demand for the Great
Northern Steeplechase on Thursday. Mister Gamp might have been dangerous had he not been brought down. , Cornwall Handicap. The Cornwall Handicap was the . usual scrambling race with True Blood winning al double figures from another outsider in King Emerald. The former was going away at the finish. Going out of the straight the order was Nassock, Mon Star, Kawanga, Corinax, Standfast (wide out), Barometer, True Blood, King Emerald, and Prince of Orange (wide out), the last halfdozen here being Kaha, Pompeius, Valsier, Maori Boy, Transformer and Bold Iront, all hopelessly placed. Kawainga led down the back and she was still there at the home turn, being attended there by Nassock, Barometer, King Emerald, True Blood, Prince of Orange, Standfast, Seatown, Pompeius and Lucy Rose. At the distance Standfast, King Emerald, Irue Blood, Seatown (who ran about a bit), and Lucy Rose were in rough line, and True Blood did beet from this point to win by a length and a-half from King Emerald with a length back to Seatown. Lucy Rose and Standfast were right .up. Pompeius, Barometer, Corinax, Valsier, Nassock, High Pitch, Maori Boy and Prince of Orange followed. Pennyplain was a good second favourite for the Hunt Club Hurdles and riding a waiting race, Rennie set out after the leaders half a mile from home and was actually first into the straight from Temperature, Mashoor and Odin with a gap back to Pukerimu, the favourite, who broke down at this stage. Pennyplain had to be shaken up to hold off Mashoor, but he responded to win by three lengths. Odin was ten lengths away, half a length in front of temperature. The others were a long way back, those of them that actually finished. Gold Money repeated her last year’s performance by winning the Members’ Handicap handsomely. She was favourite in a good betting race and her price was a liberal one, Nancy Lee, fifth fancy, also being at good odds. Prince Vai, on the rails, went out fast from Honrton, Havering, Derry Belle and Gold Money and Crossing the top Leitrim and Honiton were together in front of Gold Money, and in this order they arrived at the home turn, following them being British King, Nancy Lee, Prince Vai and Eager Rose. In the straight, Gold Money went to the front and British King bored out, the former gajng on to score comfortably by a length fro>m Nancy Lee, who is returning to form.. Three parts of a length away was Prince, Vai with Havering finishing on in fourth place. Then came Flying Prince, Eager Rose, Honiton, Takutama, Imperial Prince, Sea Cob and British King.
