SWIMMING

SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL. • A LARGE ATTENDANCE. INTERESTING EVENTS. Although the swimming season is officially closed the devotees of the sport have in nowise relaxed their interest, as was evidenced at the carnival held in the Municipal Baths last evening. Upwards of 500 people were in attendance, and the programme offered gave ample room for satisfaction. The fixture commenced at half past seven and conclusion was reached at eleven o’clock.

Although the standard of swimming at the carnival was high, the programme included more novelty events than is usually the case. Miss Y. Levvey and Mr E. R. Fitzsimmons gave an exhibition of fancy swimming, which was much appreciated. Many of the stunts required considerable physical fitness and the list was a long one. The superintendent of the Baths (Mr H. S. Baker) demonstrated the elementary principles of the crawl, the modern swimming stroke in a clear and concise manner and showed faults which were likely to retard the advancement of any learner. A junior life-saving class, under the direction of the assistant superintendent of the Baths (Mr E. R. Fitzsimmons) illustrated the different methods of grip and rescue. All of the participants have recently gained the bronze medallion of the Royal LifeSaving Society. Quite an instructive item was a reel lifesaving display, as done on a surf beach, given by the Oreti Life-Saving Club. For the purpose the reel was brought in from Oreti Beach and was placed at the western end of the pool. A full team took part. The patient, swam to the far end of the pool, the supports followed and supported the patient till the arrival of the beltman when all three were hauled in and the patient was resuscitated. During the display Mr A. Kingsland described the various manoeuvres gone through. At the conclusion he said that he wished to mention the work done by members of the club at the beach. They received no reward, monetary or otherwise, and besides their work as life-guards they performed numerous small duties on the beach. To enable a club-house, suitable to accommodate members over any holiday season, to be built funds were needed and donations would be received very gratefully. During the interval the chairman of the Baths Committee (Mr G. J. Reed) presented the prizes won at the recent centre championships and other carnivals to the successful competitors. Mr Reed said that the Baths had been a heavy burden to the ratepayers, but he would like to quote the chairman of the Finance Committee (Councillor H. J. Macalisler) who had said that any such expenditure was worth while. He wanted the public to support the Baths and it was hoped to run regular carnivals in future. The array of trophies was a splendid one and the ceremony occupied quite a considerable time. Owing to the lateness of the season and a consequent desire not to keep competitors waiting between events, the original programme was not strictly adhered to and several events were abandoned. The following are the detailed results of the various events:— .JUNIOR BOYS’ 33?, YARDS HANDICAP (3 starters). Bruce Collie 1 D. Collie 2 The winner, swimming with a strong stroke, led all the way.
