BASKETBALL

SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.

MAKAREWA WIN SENIOR SECTION.

COLLEGIATE TAKE INTERMEDIATE.

Thirty-seven teams from town and country took part in the annual seven-aside tournament played at the Waihopai Courts yesterday in glorious sunshine. Basketball has been steadily growing in popularity in this province, and a large number of spectators watched with great interest the numerous exciting games played off yesterday. Arrangements for the tournament had been carefully made by the executive, who assisted by several people who acted as referees, scorers, timekeepers and grounds stewards are to be congratulated on the way the matches followed each other in quick succession, with no noticeable hitches. The teams were divided into five sections—two senior and three intermediates—and they were again divided in order that the six courts available should be filled during the whole day. In the senior grade, the winners of the A section, Bluff, played Makarewa, the runners-up of the B section in the semi-finals, Makarewa winning S—4 after an interesting game. Rata A, the winners of the B section, played Rata B the runners-up of the A section in the semi-final, Rata B winning 7—3.

In the senior finals Makarewa defeated Rata B, the score being 9 —4 in their favour. The game was most interesting, but the players were obviously tired, and there was little combination in either team. Makarewa on several occasions threw the ball straight from the centre to the goal post, where it was caught by a forward who was usually in a good position to score. Rata shoots had fewer opportunities of scoring and their efforts to pass in the goal third, were usaully frustrated by the hard working Makarewa defenders, Rata defenders were successful in spoiling several of Makarewa’s attempts at goal. The half-time score was 5 —2 in favour of Makarewa.

In the intermediate grade, Collegiate A the winners of Section C, defeated Makarewa, the winners of Section A, by 6—3 in the semi-finals. Limehills who had won all their games in Section B were defeated by Collegiate A after a close and exciting game in the finals, the score being B—48 —4 in favour of Collegiate. Collegiate throughout Ihe game had more opportunities of scoring. Limehills were prevented several times from scoring by the quick work of the Collegiate defenders. E. Crowe scored some excellent goals for Limehills. Several casualties occurred during the tournament. One Makarewa player fell and was stunned. She was unable to take any further part in the tournament, but was able to proceed to her home later in the afternoon. Details of the games are as follows:— SENIOR. —Final.
