CLAY BIRD SHOOTING

INVERCARGILL GUN CLUB.

FIRST MATCH OF SEASON.

The clay bird shooting season was opened at Wallacetown yesterday in ideal weather, when a very successful match was. held on the Invercargill Gun Club’s grounds, shootists being present from various parts of the province. The day was very fine and conditions for shooting were • very good About 30 shootists participated and there were well over 100 spectators present. The principal event of the day was the Southland championship match, this event being won by Mr E. Lansdell, of Lumsden. Six competitors tied for first place with 13 birds each and divided the prize money and then shot off for the championship cup. Lansdell and W. Harris Jnr. each shot 15 birds straight, both missed the sixteenth bird but Lansdell won on the seventeenth bird in a very exciting finish. In presenting the cup to Mr Lansdell, Mr A. B. Moffett, president of the club, congratulated him on his win and also expressed his pleasure at seeing so many shootists turn out for the first match of the season. The officials controlling the match were: Handicapper, W. J. Harris; referee, Dr Reekie, Otautau; trapper, Mr R. Bissett. The results were:— NOVICE MATCH. For shootists who had not previously won a prize. First prize £1 10/-, second 10/-. W. T. James, Otautau, 6 birds .... 1 W. H. Sadlier, Otautau, 5 birds .. .. . 2 Also competed: T. Pascoe 4 birds, H. McQuarrie 4, A. Barlow 1, J. G. Pascoe 3, T. Sutherland 4, A. Hamilton 4. Several other competitors retired in the first round. NINE-BIRD MATCH. Open handicap. First prize £5; second £1 third 10/-. E. Lansdell and J. Thomson tied for first place with nine birds each and divided first and second money. A. E. Sands, A. L. Westcombe, T. Hedley and M. Harris divided third money with eight birds each. There were 22 competitors in this match. SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. First prize £lO and silver cup presented by A. and W. Hamilton, second £2, third £l. E. Lansdell 13 birds, I. Talbot 13, J. Thomson 13, E. Moss 13, W. J. Harris Snr. 13, W. Harris 13, all divided the prize money. The shoot-off for the cup resulted: — E. Lansdell 1 W. Harris Jnr 2 Other competitors were: A. L. 'Westcombe 12 birds, T. Hedley 10 (retired), A. Moffett (retired), J. Gorton 11 (retired), M. Harris 5 (retired), A. E. Robinson 6 (retired), W. H. Sadlier 4 (retired), P. O’Callaghan 5 (retired). SWEEPSTAKE MATCH. First miss out. Fifteen competitors. E. Lansdell and W. T. James divided first and second money with 11 birds each and I. Talbot secured third money with 10 birds.
