LIMEHILLS NOTES

The Limehills Basketball Club’s final euchre social was held in the local hall on Wednesday, May 21. Owing to it being a rough night there was not the usual number present. Sixteen tables were occupied. The first and second prizes for the ladies were won by Mrs M. Crowe and Mrs R. Boyd respectively, and for the men by Mr A. Butts and Mr G. Wilson respectively. Mr L. R. Lewis, president of the Basketball Club, thanked the public for their support, and also those who had so willingly helped to make the functions the success they had been. The club’s funds would be considerably augmented as a result of the functions, and the basketball girls appreciated the support they had received from. all. Special thanks were due to the musicians, who had played gratis for the dances. Prior to her marriage, Miss Molly Henderson. “Matai,” was entertained to a handkerchief afternoon at the residence of Mrs Rouse. The afternoon was spent, in competitions. These were won by Mrs W. J. Cowie and Miss M. Cowie. Mrs Rouse presented a beautiful assortment of handkerchiefs to Miss Henderson, who suitably replied. The Centre Bush Presbyterian Young People’s Bible Class held its annual social in the hall on Friday evening, May 23. There was a good attendance of members present and a very pleasant evening was spent in games. At choir practice on Wednesday evening, May 28, the opportunity was taken to present Miss M. Henderson with a fruit and flower bowl in recognition of her services to the Centre Bush Presbyterian Church choir. In making the presentation, Mrs Lewis referred to the active part Miss Henderson had taken in the choir and church work, and wished her future happiness and prosperity in her new sphere. The Rev. Mr Cawley also spoke, and wished Miss Henderson much happiness. Members of the Winton Croquet Club held a successful euchre tournament and dance in the Limehills Hall on Wednesday evening, May 28. Sixteen tables were occupied. These were controlled by Mrs Walker and Mrs Cowie. Twelve games were played, Mrs R. Boyd and Mrs Moylan tying for first prize for the ladies. In playing off Mrs Boyd carried off first prize. The first prize for the men was won by Mr H. McHugh and the second by Mr J. Thomson. The floor was later cleared for dancing, Mrs W. J. Cowie supplying the music and Mr C. Grant acting as M.C.
Prior to her marriage Miss Jessie Lawrie was entertained by her friends of the district to a dance and a gift evening in the local hall on Friday evening. There was a large and representative gathering of the district present. Dancing was indulged in, and at a suitable interval the chairman, Mr R. Hamilton, called upon Mr W. J. Cowie to ask Miss Lawrie to accept a tableful of useful gifts from her many friends present. In doing so, Mr Cowie referred to the many good qualities of the guest of the evening and wished Miss Lawrie and Mr Frisby long life anl happiness. Mr P. McGrath endorsed Mr Cowie’s remark. Mr S. Frisby responded on behalf of Miss Lawrie, thanking one and all for their kind remarks and beautiful gifts. Dancing was then resumed. Mr P. Kettle acted as M.C., while those supplying music for the dance were Mrs W. J. Cowie, Misses McGrath, Crowe (piano), Messrs Langford (violin), D. McGrath (accordion).
