WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WAIKAKA BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall at Waikaka on Friday, Mrs Gutchslag (president) presiding. A letter was received from Miss Stops mentioning the advantages to be derived from co-operation with the Home, Economics Association and the Home Science Extension Service conducted by Professor Strong and her able band of assistants. The meeting was unanimously in favour of cooperation. Mrs Gutschlag presented the prizes for competition winners during last year to Mrs Browning and Mrs Ross. Miss Green offered the prize for this year’s competition. Mrs Payne was elected competitions secretary. . A splendid address on gardening was given by Mr C. Burrows, Gore, and was followed with great attention. Numerous questions were asked. It was interesting

to learn that borax was a poison for earwigs. Mr Burrows mentioned that there were preparations on the market for destroying slaters, but slaters and earwigs could be killed by catching them, placing them on a stone and hitting them with another stone.

Mrs Gutschlag said that as 'the Green family was leaving the district the institute would be losing energetic members, and she called on Mrs Murdoch to. make a presentation to Mrs Green of an afternoon tea set. Mrs L. Turnbull presented Miss Green (treasurer) with a boudoir clock, and Mrs Matheson presented Miss Lottie Green with a dainty clock. Most of those present also spoke of the kindness and generosity of the whole family, and wished them happiness and success in their new sphere. Mrs Green thanked the members for their handsome gift and good, wishes.

Miss Green and Miss Lottie Green also suitably responded.
