FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.
■REPORTS OF COMMITTEES.
The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last evening. There .were present: His Worship’the Mayor (Mr J. D. Campbell) and Councillors W. Hinchey, J. Robertson, T. O’Byrne, A. J. Ball, J. G .Imlay, F. G. Hall-Jones, C. J. Brodrick, J. Gilkison, A. C. Ford, G. J. Reed and E. Sheehan. The clauses of public interest in the reports of committees were:— Works Committee. Street Signs—lndemnities: Having received a report from the City Inspector stating that it was not the practice in any of the mam centres to demand an indemnity against any claims for accident or damage arising from any fault in the erection of signs over streets; recommend that the practice requiring the owners of properties to furnish such indemnities be discontinued. Public Boarding-House Licenses: Recommend that eleven boarding-house licenses fi S ij lnC ' er B r dnted—the license for Mansfield House to be issued subject to two iron ladder escapes being provided: Mrs E. 11. Brown, Deschlers Hotel; E. E. Leen, Victoria Hotel; M. O’Neill, 134 Spey street; Patrick Collins, Criterion Hotel, F. T. Horton, City Hotel; P. J. Bcllett, Princess Hotel, T. Rutherford, Grand Hotel, T. Rutherford, Club Hotel; J. Hislop, Railway Hotel; H. Guest, Hotel Cecil; Mrs E. Bamford, Mansfield House. Uniform Colour For Motor Drivers’ Licenses: Having received a letter from the executive committee of the Municipal Association asking that the council adopt the suggestion of'the New Zealand InTY te ? f Town Clerks, that with a view to I facilitating the inspection of motor drivers’ licenses by traffic inspectors and also in the interests of the motor driving public, local authorities adopt a uniform colour system for motor drivers’ licenses, such colour to conform with the colour of the number plates each year; recommend that the suggestion be approved and that consideration be given to the matter when drivers’ licenses for 1931-32 are being ordered. Safeguard Against Fire, Water Tower: Having received a report from the City Engineer that the installation of a fire protection system at the water tower was estimated to cost £5O; recommend that the City Engineer be authorized to proceed with the installation.
Sheffield Steel Alloys, Ltd.: Having received a letter from the city solicitors regarding the council’s decision to offer the Sheffield Steel Alloys Co., the sum of £3O without prejudice in full settlement of their claim, stating that the company's solicitors had offered to accept the sum'of £4O; recommend that the council adhere to its original offer. Hut At Works Yard: Recommend that with a view to preventing the theft of materials from the works yard in Levcn street, authority be given to the City Engineer to expend the sum of £l6 in making the hut at the yard habitable to enable a night watchman to sleep on the premises and that the City Engineer be authorized to pay a man 10/- per week for sleeping there. New Pumps For Waterworks: Recommend that the City Engineer be authorized to call tenders for the supply of pumps for the waterworks as under: Centrifugal Borehole Pump (No. 2); 4in Centrifugal Pump; Centrifugal Borehole Pump (No. 3). Financial provision has been made in the estimates for same. Finance Committee. Radio Land Line From Civic Theatre: Having received a letter from the Southland Radio Club asking for permission to instal a land line to ■ the Civic Theatre for broadcasting purposes and asking for a donation towards the club’s funds; recommend that permission be granted to connect the line to the theatre and that the council pay the cost of installation up to the sum of £5. Change of Name on Titles to Corpor<n. Properties: Having received a letter from the city solicitors stating that the District Land Registrar had asked that by way of transmission application should be made to have a memorial of the change of name from borough to city entered upon all the titles to lands held by the City Corporation ; recommend that authority be given to the city solicitors to have the name altered on all titles to' corporation lands.’ International Order of Good Templars: Having received a letter from the New Zealand Grand Lodge of the International Order of Good Templars in biennal session assembled at Christchurch, Easter 1930, asking that councils when issuing licenses to dance halls and cabarets make it a condition of the issue of the license that anyintoxicating liquors shall not be allowed in such places for consumption and that provision be made for the cancelling of any license where a breach of such condition was proved; having no recommendation to make.
