WOMAN GAMBLER

“POKER ALICE” TUBBS DEAD. One of the most romantic and picturesque figures of the Klondyke gold rush has just passed away in America in the person of “Poker Alice” Tubbs, a Devonshire woman who was renowned for her gambling proclivities in association with the bold bad men of the Wild West. “Poker Alice” was never seen without a cigar between her lips. She mixed with desperadoes of all nations, had seen men shot at her side, and. has now died following an operation.

This remarkable woman was 77 years of age. She came to America from Devonshire when quite young, and later married a mining engineer. From him she learnt the game that earned her the soubriquet that mad.e her world-famous.

Among her acquaintances she numbered the toughest men and women in America the world has produced, all attracted by a chance to make easy money. She outlived most of her acquaintances, and as time advanced left the various gambling saloons and took to a steadier life. She had to have a little excitement, however, and recently had a brush with the prohibition authorities. She was pardoned and later became ill. .
