TOWN PLANNING
WAIRARAPA REGION. BOUNDARIES AGREED ON. (Per United Press Association). Masterton, May 30. A conference to-day between the Director of Town Planning and other members of the Board and local body representatives resulted in an almost unanimous agreement that the Wairarapa region should comprise the area from Palliser Bay on the south between the Tararuas and the sea to and including the Pahiatua borough and county and the Akitio County on the north. During the conference, Mr. Mawson dealt incisively with the idea that regional planning and town planning amounted to setting Up a new and costly government department and providing fat jobs for their people. He invited his hearers to take a good look at the department. It consisted of himself and his secretary. Mr. Mawson added that he did not think it would be necessary to increase the town planning department now or at any time, unless it was asked to undertake further duties. He hoped no more would be heard in this district about a costly government department. It was rather irritating, specially when he was getting about half the remuneration he would' make in private practice.
Later Mr. Mawson said that regional and town planning would put money into the pockets of the people of this country instead of taking it out.
