GENERAL NOTES. The Huntingdon sailed on the afternoon tide yesterday. She was prevented from sailing earlier through the weather conditions interefering with loading operations. The Union Company’s steamer Waikouaiti sailed from Sydney at 2 a.m. yesterday for Bluff direct, being due here on Tuesday afternoon to discharge Australian general cargo. She will sail again on Wednesday for Dunedin. Tlie Karepo is expected to leave Westport this evening for Bluff direct, being due hero on Tuesday morning to discharge coal. The vessel will leave again the following day for Oamaru. Scheduled to leave Dunedin to-day for Bluff direct the Union Company’s steamer Poolta is expected to berth to-morrow evening. After discharging a quantity of general cargo including timber from Grafton, she will proceed on Monday to Greymouth.
Messrs J. G. Ward and Company advise that the Argyllshire sailed from Liverpool on May 24 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and New Plymouth. Cargo for Bluff will be transhipped from Dunedin. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor liner Rangitata which sailed from Auckland shortly after noon on Friday for Bluff direct, is expected to berth here at 6 p.m. to-morrow to complete discharge of her London cargo and to continue loading. She will sail again on Wednesday for Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Wellington. The Marine Department advises that Jack’s Point Light, south of Timaru, will not be converted to an automatic light until June 2.
The Federal steamer Cambridge is expected at Port Chalmers to-day to discharge general cargo, after which she will go into dry dock for the fitting of a new propeller boss, in place of the one damaged on the run from Panama to Auckland. The Government, steamer Tutanekai is due at Dunedin to-day from Wellington and South Island lighthouses. She will toad stores on Monday, thence for southern and West Coast lighthouses. The Kartigi, loaded for Melbourne and Adelaide, is bar-bound at Greymouth. She has been fixed to load at Adelaide and Melbourne for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Auckland.
The heavy swell which has held up seven vessels at Greymouth for nearly a fortnight still continues, and it is not yet known when the steamers will be able to leave the port. Advice received by the Shaw-Savill and Albion Company states that the motor ship Zealandic arrived at London on Wednesday afternoon from Port Chalmers, via Panama, after a fast passage of 33 days. The vessel cleared Port Chalmers on the morning of April 25. Cable advice received by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the motor ship Rangitiki arrived at-Southamp-ton on Wednesday from Wellington, via Panama, after a fast passage of 32 days and one day ahead of schedule. The vessel left Wellington on April 25. A wireless message received by the Federal Company from the captain of the Kent states that the vessel will arrive at Auckland at daybreak next Wednesday from Liverpool, the Kent is bringing general cargo for discharge ’at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Dunedin on June 24 and proceeds later to Bluff where she will commence loading. It is said that workers in a boiler factory, where mechanically-produced noises are at their worst, can converse in ordinary tones without difficulty, their aural sense being adjusted by long association to the noises proceeding about them. A parallel is afforded in a small way by the experience of Gisborne residents ill regard to the dredge Korua (says the Poverty Bay Herald). When the vessel first began her excavating in the harbour, the groans and grumbles of her bucket gear were excruciating to the nerves of many people living within a range of a mile or more, but it was not long before the noises melted into the background of public consciousness. Nowadays, the dredge works along without attracting the slightest attention or inspiring the least annoyance to the majority of folk, jn fact, it would surprise many residents to know that the Korua is dredging almost daily in the new berthage opposite the block yard.
KOTARE’S MOVEMENTS. When leaving her berth at the Kitchener street wharf, Dunedin, at 6.30 a.m. on Thursday, the small steamer Kotare grounded on a bank. 'The vessel was riioving away from the wharf when the strong south-west wind swung her out of deep water. She remained on the bank until the afternoon, when she floated off with the rising tide. 'The Kotare will sail for Invercargill and Port Craig when the weather shows an improvement. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
