And to “outrun the constable,” therefore, means to let one’s financial affairs get out of control, to spend faster than one earns. Of course, for some people it is necessary to do so on account of having already “outrun the constable.”

The best jff ace to live is “just within one’s income.” But very few few of us are so conceited as to imagine that we are entitled to live in the best place!
