VERANDAH COLLAPSES

MOTOR SMASHES POSTS.

CAREER IN REVERSE GEAR.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wanganui, May 29.

At about 8.30 to-night a motor car in reverse gear backed along the kerb beside the footpath in Victoria Avenue and brought down several verandah posts with a loud crash, the verandahs collapsing on to the footpath.

The car then backed across the street and hit a dividing wall between two shops on the opposite side. The next move was to return across the street, coming to rest against another verandah post. The car was not very much damaged, but 60 feet of verandah collapsed, though luckily no passers-by were ■ injured. Seated in the front seat of the car was Joseph F. Klegge, of Gisborne, who was later charged at the police station with unlawfully converting to his own use a car belonging to William A. E. Lowry, of Hunterville.
