REPORT DENIED

EARTHQUAKE IN FIJI ISLANDS.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, May 29.

The Press Association has received the following unsigned message from Suva: “ Oceanic Press broadcasted yesterday evening that the Fiji Islands were severely shaken by an earthquake at; noon to-day. The mission schooner was dismasted, the auxiliary schooner Veilomani foundered, and the schooner Motau was damaged. It was the most severe shock since 1913.” This is absolutely misleading. The earthquake yesterday did no damage to the auxiliary mission schooner and the Veilomani was dismasted earlier in the morning owing to a rotten mast in a squall. It did not founder. The schooner Motau was stranded on a reef three weeks ago. The ’quake lasted 20 seconds. Please correct misstatement.
