The tug (Theresa Ward), sailed for Halfmoon Bay at 1 p.m. with passengers, mails and cargo. She sails from Halfmoon Bay for Bluff at 9 a.m. (Thursday).. The weather at the port on Wednesday was extremely boisterous, a southwest gale blowing, with intermittent rain squalls. Work on the waterfront proceeded at intervals on the Huntingdon. The Hororata, from Port* Chalmers, was expected to berth on the midday tide, but failed to arrive, probably being delayed by the- westerly gale that has been blowing since Tuesday evening. It is unlikely that she will berth before 2.30 p.m. to-day. The Union Company’s steamer Poolta is expected, to leave Wellington to-day and Dunedin on Saturday for Bluff direct, being due here on Sunday to discharge general cargo. Upon completing she proceeds to Greymouth. The Waipiata is expected to leave Auckland about Monday for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff, being due here about June 9 to discharge and load general merchandise. The Union Company advises that the Waikouaiti, which loaded at Port Kembla,
Port Stephens, and Sydney, is to leave the latter port to-day for Bluff, Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington. She should arrive at this port about Tuesday. The Shaw, Savill Company advises that the Mahana, which arrived at Lyttelton on Tuesday from Port Chalmers, will proceed Idter to Napier to complete discharge of her London cargo. She will then commence loading at Napier, and complete at Waikokopu, New Plymouth; Wellington and Auckland. The vessel will sail finally from Auckland on June 20 for Halifax and London, via the Panama canal. TTie Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor ship Port Huon is due at Dunedin this afternoon from Liverpool, via northern ports, to discharge a large quantity of Home cargo. When her holds have been cleared, the. vessel will commence loading at Fort Chalmers for England. She will sail early next week for Bluff to continue loading. The Waikokopu wharfinger- reported as follows to the last meeting of the Wairoa Harbour Board: —‘Tour vessels worked the port during the month, viz: —April 7, Parera, landing 280 tons chaff, 1374 tons southern produce and 54 ironbark .piles; April 8, Pukeko, landing 75 tons cement, 2830 posts, 100 drums petrol, 10 tons manure, 11 tons general, and taking away 300 bags manure and 44 B.R. drums; April 22, Parera, landing 323 tons coal; April 24, Pukeko, landing 135 tons general, 110 drums petrol, 2 ironbark ( piles, and taking away 240 B.R. drums, 6 sacks potatoes, 80 sacks pelts, and 196 drums fuel oil. The port has been workable for four days during the month. The beacons have been attended to and, are in working order.” > Two Whangaroa fishermen had an exciting experience with a large reremai shark while they were' netting mullet recently (says a correspondent of the New Zealand Herald). The fishermen were in a dinghy, and the shark became entangled in the net. After threshing the water for some time the shark became quiet, and the fishermen ventured closer. They managed to get hold of the tail and had the fish practically clear of the net when it revived. In the struggle which followed, one man was knocked overboard, but he wasted little time in getting back into the boat. The shark escaped, taking with it a large portion of the net. KOTARE’S MOVEMENTS. The Kotare was expected to leave Dunedin last evening or this morning for Invercargill direct, being due at the jetty tomorrow. It is hoped to despatch, her on Saturday for Port Craig. HORORATA TO BERTH TO-DAY. The boisterous weather conditions prevailing at the port yesterday prevented the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Hororata from London via Panama, Suva, Lyttelton and Port Chalmers, from berthing. She lay outside all night and is expected to. berth .this morning. The vessel has general merchandise to di&harge at Bluff and will sail again about Saturday for New Plymouth to complete discharge and commence loading. She will subsequently load at Wanganui, Picton, Timaru, and Wellington. The vessel is scheduled to clear the lastmentioned port on June 21 for Southampton and London, via Montevideo. NEW ZEALAND—SYDNEY SERVICE. The Union Company advises that in order to provide a relieving steamer in the Wellington—Lyttelton ferry service during the annual surveys of the ferry steamers Maori and Wahine, it will be necessary to withdraw the Marama from the New Zealand — Sydney service for a short period and the time-table will be affected as follows: — The Marama, which arrived at Sydney on Monday, will sail for Wellington to-day, instead of the Maunganui, May 30, and on arrival, June 2, will withdraw to relieve the Maori and the Wahine. She will resume from Wellington on Friday, June 20, for Sydney, thereafter continuing as at present time-tabled. The Maunganui, which arrived at Sydney on Monday, will sail to-morrow for Auckland and return to Sydney as previously time-tabled for the Marama. She will leave Sydney on Friday, June 13, for Auckland, continuing at time-tabled. The Tahiti, from Wellington on June 4, for Sydney and from Sydney on June 12 for Wellington, will provide the connection be-, tween these ports for passengers and cargo, owing to cancellation of the Maunganui’s sailing from Wellington on June 6, and the Marama’s from Sydney to Wellington, on June 13.
