THE GORE BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Gore branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held at the Baptist Church on Tuesday, when Mrs. F. M. Beattie presided over a good attendance. Miss Robertson (the branch’s delegate) gave a comprehensixe account of the annual Dominion convention held at Timaru, showing that the reports submitted there indicated health in all departments of the union’s activities. The newly-acquired headquarters property in Wellington had the full confidence and support of members and friends, and was proving a good investment and a means of greater usefulness. Among the chief remits adopted at the convention was one drawing attention to, and protesting against, liquor in cabarets, which, it was stated, was proving detrimental in the lives of young people of both sexes. The reports of the adult unions, Y branches, Loyal Temperance Union and Bands of Hope all showed increase in membership and enthusiasm, hopefulness being the keynote throughout. The president thanked Miss Robertson for her report. Mrs. T. Stevenson was reappointed local agent for the White Ribbon as Mrs. A. McLauchlan was unable, owing to sickness, to attend to this phase of the branch’s work. It was reported that the winter session of the Band of Hope was being recommenced this week, the Baptist Sunday School being responsible for the programme. It was also reported that the temperance essay in the local primary' schools was being arranged this year for July, instead of December as in previous years. Mrs. Brown, consented to attend to the work of the cradle roll department during the month of June.

It was resolved that the next meeting be a pay-up social in the Gaiety Hall, “White Ribbon Day” being observed on that evening. .
