Miss B. Hewitt has returned from Ashburton.

Mrs Patterson, Christchurch, is staying with Mrs J. A. Horner, Oreti.

Mr and Mrs C. Bigwood (Woodlands) and Mrs S. Woods (Christchurch) were guests of Mrs H. Woodnorth last week. Mrs Horne, Mataura Island, has been the guest of her mother, Mrs J. B. Porteous. Mrs Hastings, Christchurch, has been staying with her mother,. Mrs O’Neill.' Mr and Mrs J. Jenkins and family, Greymouth, have taken up their residence in the town.

Miss Packwood commenced duties as temporary special assistant in the Winton District High School on Monday. Miss Mavis Stewart spent the week-end in Invercargill. Mr and Mrs H. N. Wilson (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs W. Wilson (Motu-Mote), Mr and Mrs A. A. Liddell and their son, Lex (Otautau) were guests of Miss D. Wilson last week.

Mrs Olive and Miss Al. Alartin leave on Thursday for Auckland and from there sail for Fiji on an extended tour of the South Sea Islands. The Winton School Diamond Jubilee celebrations were brought to a successful conclusion on Thursday evening when there were about five hundred present at the bail held in the school. The rooms were brilliantly lit up with coloured electric lights. Airs McArthur’s orchestra of eight instruments was assisted by Alesdames J. B. and AV. J. Cowie, Aliases 11. Cowie, AL AlcKenzie (Piano) and Air W. Jamieson (cornet). The Grand Alarch was led off by Air and Airs J. P. McWilliam. The old dances were a feature of the evening and were entered hearitly into by old and young alike. Supper was provided by Airs W. Gill in the Alanual Training School. On Wednesday evening a very successful dance was held in the Ridges Public Hall, under the management of the Mirnihau Girls’ Hockey Club Committee, there being a large and representative gathering present. The proceeds of the evening will considerably strengthen the finances of the newlyformed club. The hall was artistically decorated for the occasion with streamers and greenery. Excellent music for dancing was supplied by Misses R. Caldwell and M. K. McDonald and Mr F. S. McDonald, while acceptable assistance was also rendered by Stewart’s Orchestra. The duties of Masters of. Ceremonies were capably and efficiently carried out by Messrs R. McCaughan and R. Walker, who kept things swinging merrily throughout the piece. Alter an enjoyable evening’s cards the winners were Miss J. Templeton and Miss V. Bennett, and Messrs C. Todd and R. McGregor. The consolation trophies were awarded to Messrs Bruce and Todd. For the dance held afterwards excellent music was supplied by the Star Dance Band, while the duties of M.C. were capably carried out by Mr J. Bruce. At. a suitable period Mr R. K. Bain, chairman of the committee, thanked the gathering for their attendance and intimated that the function would be held fortnightly during the winter months. Despite the rough night there w r as a fair attendance at the weekly card tournament on Thursday evening. The games were closely’ contested throughout, Mrs J. McLean scoring first honours, and Mrs Foster (Invercargill), second in the ladies’ class, while Mr T. Henderson and Mr W. Moore were first and second respectively in the men’s. Miss Swap spent the vacation with her people at Otautau. Mr Thos. More and his daughter returned from a trip to Australia last week. Mrs Mangan has been visiting'her parents.

Mrs James Hutchison and family, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs T. Armstrong, Orepuki, have returned. Mrs A. Tull, Christchurch, is visiting her parents—Mr and Mrs James. Prentice, Bath Road.

Mrs B. Hancock, senior, has returned from Invercargill. Mrs Govan, Otago Central, is visiting Mrs J. B. Hunter, Shrewsbury street. Miss Long, Milford, is the guest of Mrs P. B. Brendtson.

Miss Angus, Dunedin, is visiting Mr and Mrs A. D. Angus, Bank of Zealand. Mr and Mrs F. Thompson and family, formerly of Lumsden, have taken up residence here.

Misses W. and J. Gordon, Hamilton, are staying with their parents, Dr C. H. and Mrs Gordon. Miss Barbara Sale spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs B. Banks, The Beach.

Miss Ross, Invercargill, has been staying with Mr and Mrs J. A. 0. Mackenzie, South Riverton.

Mrs E. Gray, Palmerston Street, has returned from Dunedin.

Miss Malcolm, Hawkes Bay, is on a visit to friends at the seaside.

Miss Birch has returned from a holiday spent in Dunedin. 4 The Wembley Dance, held in More’s Hall Al Thursday evening was well attended and proved very enjoyable. Excellent music was supplied by Mr Ed. Hunter (cornet), Mrs Hunter (violin) and Miss Green (piano). Amongst those present were:— Mesdames L. GORE CHAT. (From Our Correspondent). Miss Blaikie has returned to Wanganui. Mrs H. A. Price has returned from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Hugh Smith, McNab, have left via Australia for a trip to Great Britain. '? Mrs 0. R. Williamson has returned to Christchurch. Miss McHutcheson has returned from Dunedin. Mrs H. Grant and her two children, who have been on a visit to Mrs H. C. MacGibbon, Wolsley street, have returned to Dunedin.

Mrs F. Reid (Dunedin) has been on a visit to her mother, Mrs F. Wallis, Crewe street.

Mr and Mrs G. Agnew’ and family, who had been staying with Mrs W. Kirk, Crewe street, have returned to Dipton. Mrs Gilkison, who had been spending a few days with Mrs A. J. Hawke, Denton street, has returned to Invercargill. Mrs F. Wallis, senr., is on a visit to Timaru.

Mrs Cunningham, Oamaru, is staying with her sister, Mrs T. Landels, Charlton.

Mrs H. G. Wallis has returned from a visit to Dunedin.

Bridge hostesses during the week were: Mesdames J. A. Edwards, J. A. Blaikie, J. M. Boyne and F. Wallis, Senr. Mrs J. E. Rogers gave a delightful bridge party at her home in Irk street last Friday afternoon. Pale pink chrysanthemums were used with pretty effect to decorate the drawing room and hall and the hostess, ■who was assisted by Miss Janet Rogers, received her guests in a black ring velvet frock with cream lace collar and cuffs. Present were Mesdames W. Kirk, F. V. Piper, H. Oswin, F. Wallis (Senr.), A. F. Houston, R. B. Bannerman, J. Brown, J. A. Edwards, R. G. Stokes, J. M. Boyne, T. L. Piller, F. Wallis (Junr.), J. A.
