HOCKEY PLAYER’S STRENGTH
BANE OF STRONG MEN. Tearing a pack of cards in two is a feat of strength which, one would imagine, must be assisted by some knack. But apparently, that is not so. Mr R. L. Mathews, a Welsh hockey international and schoolmaster, who used to play Rugby football for Cardiff, can do it, and he says there is no trick about it at all. It is said that Mr Mathews took a pack of cards and without the slightest apparent effort tore them in two. He then took one half and tore it in quarters, and then took the quarters and tore then into eighths, though this last feat definitely necessitated a struggle. Mr Mathews is quite a small man. Naturally he is the bane of professional strong men, because he can perform all their tricks with little effort and makes them look small in front of the spectators. On one occasion a strong man had bent a bar of iron into a loop, and proved that the iron was solid. Mathews walked on to the stage, and to the great delight of the audience, picked up the bar and straightened it out again
