AUSTRALIA’S DEBTS
AMOUNT TO £1,104,028,062. Particulars of the indebtedness of the Commonwealth and the States were given in the Federal House of Representatives by the Treasurer (Mr Theodore), in reply to a question. On June 30 last, said Mr Theodore, the Commonwealth debt amounted to £377,621,572, of which £287,817,745 was war debt. Of the total £217,835,281 was owing in the Commonwealth, and £159,786,291 overseas. Interest charges, said Mr Theodore, amounted to £11,553,191 in the Commonwealth and £8,018,486 overseas. The average rates were $5 6/1 per cent, and £5 4/- per cent, respectively. State debts overseas, he added, amounted to £412,496,612, and in the Commonwealth to £313,909,878. The average interest rate was £4 13/5 per cent, overseas and £5 4/7 in Australia.
