ROSLYN BUSH NEWS

With a view to raising funds for the carrying out of improvements to the school grounds, thj nurchase of a gramophone and,, records and a library for the Roslyn Bush School, an energetic committee with Colonel J. Hargest at its head was formed some weeks ago. It was decided to hold a bring and buy sale on May 21 and as a canvass of the district resulted in an excellent response, a splendid array of produce, sewing, sweets etc. was available for auction on Wednesdav evening. Despite the wretched weather conditions prevailing, the school, together with a large tent attached to the building, was crowded. The chairman thanked the people for braving the elements to assist the worthy cause. He had -leasure in declaring the function open. Throughout the evening good business was done at the sweet and general produce stalls and at 10 p.m. the unsold goods were auctioned by Mr N. Brown. In nearly every case the full value of the article was realized.

Several competitions were held during the evening and were well supported, the finals evoking considerable interest. Competition winners were: Ladies’ nail driving,' Miss D. Irving; men’s nail driving, Mr J. Falconer, Invercargill; ladies’ quoits, Miss C. Irving; men's quoits, Mr E. McNaught;, sheep guessing, Mr C. Drysdale guessed the correct weight (144j1b). The shooting gallery with Mr A. McDonald in charge did brisk business.

At the conclusion of the sale Colonel Hargest thanked all who had assisted to make the function such an unqualified success. Special thanks were due to people who had given donations although they were not living in the district. • Mr A. A. Cook, headmaster of the school, also thanked all present and especially the committee which had worked so well. By means of the subsidy given by the Education Department it would be possible to carry out extensive improvements to the grounds as well as to equip the school with apparatus. Two musical items, a song by Mr O’Neill and a violin solo by Mr Roy, were appreciated. As a result of the effort approximately £52 was raised.
