PEBBLY HILLS

AFFORESTATION SCHEME. SOUTHLAND MEN EMPLOYED. In the last few days there has been considerable discussion in Southland regarding the Pebby Hills afforestation scheme, which was recently decided upon by the State Forest Service and was announced as a likely means of the relief of unemployment. ' Rumours have been current that only 1000 acres of the 6000 comprising the area were to be planted, and that Dunedin men were to be employed on the work. A strong denial to these rumours was given to a Times reporter on Saturday evening by the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, who arrived by the express. Mr Perrelle said that as much of the areas as possible was to be planted during the remaining three months of the planting season. For this purpose as many men as possible were to be taken on. “I cannot say what area will be planted,” said the Minister. “It might be 3000 or 4000 acres. It is impossible to say. As much as possible will be done." Asked if only Southland men were to be employed on the work, the Minister said that he had arranged for local men to be engaged. It was also proposed that the State Forest Service should acquire adjacent areas for further planting, but that depended upon the price of the land. TELEGRAM FROM MINISTER REPLY TO SOUTHLAND LEAGUE. On Saturday afternoon in reply to the Southland League’s message of the previous day, the following telegram was received by the secretary (Mr J. S. Dick) from the Commissioner of State Forests (the Hon. W. B. Taverner): “Referring to your telegram regarding afforestation scheme at Pebbly Hills, your league may rest assured that as great a proportion of the total area of the scheme will be planted this season as circumstances will permit. Every effort is being made to that end. Regarding employment of Southland men on work I have already been approached by the Hon. Mr Perrelle regarding that point and have assured him that preference will be given to Southland unemployed.”
