THAT NAME AGAIN.

To the Editor. Sir, —While a discussion is taking place, perhaps it would interest your readers to hear the explanation given me by an old identity many years ago of how Invercargill came to be named. When Captain Cargill was Superintendent of Otago he was sent south to choose a site for the capital of Southland. Riverton was at the time the most important town, but he chose the present site at the mouth of the Waihopai. This lie named “Invercargill,” which is short for “inversion of Cargill.”—l am, etc., “PIONEER.” Invercargill, May 23, 1930. To the Editor. Sir,—All honour where honour is due. Mr Macalister deserves civic glory, but let him stop, at Invercargill. It is good for sore eyes to see a lawyer rattled. The public was asked to comment on the proposal to change the name of the city. What wrong, then, have you done by publishing comment which shows that the public thinks the idea too silly for words? Personally I think Invercargill must neither be changed nor shortened, but it should be added to. Let “Invercargill” become “Inverma’cargill”— if by two syllables, let it be “Invercargillery” to rhyme with “distillery”—if by three syllables, let it be “Inveram’caragill,” to preserve the Scotch roll —and so on. However, —I am, etc., LET WELL ALONE.
