RETURNED SOLDIERS

INVERCARGILL ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the executive of the Invercargill R.S.A. was held on Tuesday. There were present: Messrs Puckey (in the chair), R. Lepper, P. Baldwin, J. Johnston, P. Gilfedder and J. Roderique and the actingsecretaries, Messrs McGill and McDougall. The secretary reported that the present unemployed soldiers’ list stood at 49, of which 34 were married men. To date twelve men had been placed with the City Corporation and two on afforestation work at Pebbly Hills, and two in private employment. In connection with unemployment Messrs Johnston and Roderique were appointed to act as a works committee. They were hopeful of being able to obtain employment for some more men at Pebbly Hills. The secretary reported that all cases recently placed before the War Funds Association had been sympathetically, and satisfactory dealt with. At present there were 14 soldier patients in the Southland Hospital, who were being visited weekly. The Poppy Day organizer is to present his complete report at a meeting to be held on June 2. The executive and social committee met to discuss the matter of club rooms. A sub-committee was appointed to inquire into ways and means of securing suitable rooms, and to report to the next meeting of the executive and social committee.
