■ The first race at the Ashburton County Racing Club meeting to-day ia scheduled for noon.
The valuable Newcastle Cup of £ll5O (Im. 3f.) will be decided in N.S.W. this afternoon.

Entries for a number of the most important classic races and Australian handicaps close on June 3.
It is stated that a profit of round about £4OO was realized on Forbury Park T.C.’s Winter meeting.
Owners and trainers are reminded that entries for the South Canterbury J.C. Winter meeting are due on Thursday. „
The sale of horses in the estate of the late Mr R. B. Stiven will take place at W’allacetown on Wednesday next.
The smart New Zealand-bred filly, Habit, may be found racing at Moorefield meeting in Sydney to-day.
It is reported from Wingatui that the jumper Rag Tag has been displaying symptoms of soreness.
The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting will open on Saturday next and continue over Tuesday and Wednesday.
i It is reported that several northern would-be purchasers have been making inquiries about Sentinel Lad.
■ Diolite, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, was ranked as the best two-year-old in England during the past season.
F. W. Ellis may in turn try Fenham, Banner Boy and Abbeville out as performers over the little sticks.
Two Thousand Guineas winner, Diolite, who won £5459 in stakes as a youngster was a cheap yearling at 480gns.
Coomassie, Some Maid and Battle Flag should attract attention when submitted at auction on Wednesday next.
s The locally-trained pacer, Imperial Bingen, will probably be raced at the Forbury Park T.C. Benefit gathering.
The Epsom Derby fancy, Diolite, was the first of the progeny- of his sire, Diophon, by Grand Parade, to score in a race.
H. Gray will probably act as pilot to Prince Vai in the Flying Handicap at the Taumarunui R.C. meeting this afternoon.
Three valuable brood mares, Redowa, Lady Sentinel and Sedna, will come under the hammer at Wallacetown on Wednesday next.
It is understood that several locallytrained horses will be raced at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s forthcoming Winter meeting.
The brood mare Redowa, who is -to be sold next week, in turn produced Baldowa, Red Boa and Miss Redowa, also a Panmure filly.
Jockey R. Reed is to resume riding in Maoriland at the Auckland Racing Club’s Winter meeting on June 3, 5 and 7 at Ellerslie.
A youngster claiming to be a half-brother by Balboa to Sentinel Lad may attract attention at the sale of the late Mr Stivens’ horses. «
The only horse injured at the recent Wanganui Jockey Winter meeting was General Gas, who broke a fetlock and was destroyed.
A. E. Ellis will probably be very busy this afternoon at Ashburton in an endeavour to hold second place on the jockeys’ list.
Despite her hard races at the Southland Racing Club’s Winter meeting, Red Sea stood up to her work well and is ready for Wingatui. 1
During the past week Lucky Light has been working quietly on the Southland R.C. tracks and may be prominent at the D.J.C. fixture.
The imported English stallion, Silverado, first at the stud in Australia arid latterly in N.Z., has returned tt> N.S.W. where his services are in demand.
The Tractor gelding Vinegrove, who has been racing unluckily of late, has been moving freely on the Southland R.C. tracks during the present week.
It is expected that jumping horseman, W. J. Bowden, will return to the saddle at the Auckland meeting and will ride useful Mister Gamp.
The statement that no female descendant of Hunting Song has won a race is incorrect. His daughter Toboggan has scored at two North Island meetings.
N.Z. Referee states that the horses owned by the late Mr C. Elgar may be kept in framing and raced by Mrs Elgar, with W. Moroney still in charge of the team.
It is claimed that an offer of 1250 guineas for the imported English stallion, Valkyrian, sire .of Red Sea and other winners, was recently turned down.
The veteran pacer Downcast, who has not won a race for some time past, is •working under saddle on the Southland R.C. tracks and is looking well.
It would appear that the recently announced retirement of The Hawk was premature, as the son of Martian is still being galloped on the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club tracks.
Local trainer A. McKenzie has taken over a range of stabling and dwelling house near North Invercargill and it is on the cards that he will not have, to seek patrons next season.
The Some Boy ll—Marble Star gelding, Mosaic, who has won over various distances in Auckland province, is being schooled for hurdle racing from A. Tinker’s stables.
During the past week G. Hope has been keeping Remindful and Zelanian going strongly on the Southland Racing Club tracks and both have been moving very freely.
The Oamaru Jockey Club’s Winter meeting, a one-day fixture, will come up for consideration on Saturday, July 5. There will be seven events including a hack and hunters’ steeplechase.
The sum of £3600 will be distributed in stakes at the Forbury Park T.C.’s Special fixture for the purpose of raising funds for the relief of the unemployed. Entries are due on Wednesday next at 5 p.m.
At the Oamaru Jockey Club’s Winter meeting there will be two light harness
events on the programme, Oamaru Trot (harness), £lO5, class 3.42 (one mile and a-half) and Waikawa Trot, £lOO, class 2.26, saddle (one mile).
As she is at present in the pink of condition, the locally-trained pacing mare, Erin’s Fortune, may be given an opportunity to further distinguish herself at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Unemployment meeting next month.
The English Two Thousand Guineas winner, Diolite, who is related to the Wanganui sire Grand Knight, is engaged in the Epsom Derby (run on June 4) and the St. Leger, to say nothing of other valuable classic events to come later.
Should Zelanian win a race in the near future and the Kilbroney gelding is shaping that way, a great 1 deal of credit will be due to his trainer, G. Hope, who has converted a very disappointing performer into a‘ promising galloper. In the event of the elder brother to the successful Western Australian racehorse, Insurgent, failing in his endeavours across the flat, his trainer will have a horse under his care who may take to the batten game, as Zelanian is built that way.
The smart little galloper, Milliner, who owes her success at the recent S.R.C. Winter meeting in a measure to the patient handling of L. J. Ellis, has been retired for the season. Despite teething and other drawbacks A. McKenzie turned the Some Boy II mare out in rare shape for her winning essay and many veteran racegoers present at the S.R.C. fixture recalled the days when the ex-flat and jumping horseman successfully prepared Leinster and other good horses to race in Southland. It may not be generally known, but Alex McKenzie has in his time steered flat, hurdle, steeplechase and trotting contest winners.
Several onlookers not acquainted with F. J. McKay were surprised to see the Gladstone trainer riding Taramoa over the battens on the S.R.C. tracks on Thursday morning to give his pupil Paris (G. Dempster) a lead, but there was no cause for speculation. The local horseman has always had a leaning in this direction and in the hunting field and on the tracks he has on various occasions demonstrated the fact that he is just as eager to pilot a jumper as his sire was before him, and Mr F. McKay, senr., won many races between the flags in the early days of racing in Otago and Southland. In piloting Taramoa on Thursday his trainer was enabled to give Paris the exact kind of lead at the fences that he desired for his elder Solferino pupil l —Paris is senior brother to Taramoa. In the lesson referred to, Paris never attempted to turn his head from an obstacle, although he was verycareful of his hinder end until he gained confidence at the game.
During the past few days the Endeavour Lodge trainer J. A. Rowland has had the breaking tackle on a well-grown, docile filly of 18 months t.hat has attracted some attention on the local tracks by reason of the fact that she is well-turned, nicely- grown, and ranks as the first foal of her dam. The rising two-year-old is by Tractor from Obligio, by Winkie (imp.) from Soberside, bv Obligado (imp.)-—Broadside, by Goldsbrough—Powder (imp.), hence she can claim to'"be bred in the purple. The dam of the Endeavour Lodge youngster was a useful galloper herself and always created the impression that she might develop into a successful brood mare, as she had size, substance, and breeding to recommend her, and it can thus be understood that southern students of blood lines are curious to see what she can produce for the thoroughbred industry.
Two of the youngsters recently- broken in by F. W. Ellis, the filly by Solferino —■ Michaela (C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap winner and dam of 'Nedda), and her very much taller stablemate Adorn, by Sutala—Adour, have been cantering on the S.R.C. tracks of late and both move as if they have attractive galloping prospects. The big Adorn is very determined in her action, and, as she is evenly built and balanced, despite her exceptional size, the chances are that she will prove to be well worth training.
Local trainer R. McLellan has been keeping the gallopers Membo, Lucky Maid and Memories up to the collar as gallopers of late and the trio are doing well. The three-year-old gelding, Memories, may furnish into a very useful galloper next season, as he has size and pace, while he is not easy to fault when it comes to general conformation. He can also be accepted as being bred the right way, as he was got by Tractor (imp.) from Sweet Memory, a smart galloper and a daughter of the successful North Island sire, Maniapoto from Pretty Helen, by Sweet Simon—Lady Helen. McLellan’s pupil gained a reputation as a bucker during his early education, but he behaved well at the barrier in his race in the Trial Stakes at the S.R.C. Winter meeting, and in the actual running he was up with the leaders to the home turn, after which his condition went back on a novice who had only been treated to several short sprints previously.
The East Road trainer, T. E. Pankhurst, is handling a well-bred aspirant for turf honours in a filly by Sutala (son of Elysian) from Roden, by Danube (son of Martian and unbeaten) from the imported English mare Remission IL, by Black Sand, breeding that suggest racing merit. Pankhurst’s charge is taking to her education kindly and promises to be a useful recruit to her mentor’s successful string next season.
Held on lease by her trainer of the future, a rising three-year-old filly at present undergoing her educational course from Endeavour Lodge, looks like galloping with profit in the days to come for J. A. Rowland. The youngster referred to, who ranks as a younger full sister to Cough, a smart maiden performer in the stable of F. W. Ellis, is by Sutala from Yawn (dam of Carnot), by Cooltrim (son of Flying Fox) —Quietest, by Grafton (son of Galopin sire of St. Simon)—Slumber, by Trenton (son of Musket) from Nightmare (a famous dam), by Panic—Evening Star (imp.), possesses a pedigree for lovers of the thoroughbred to linger over. Should she not develop into a satisfactory performer Rowland’s pupil would still class as a beautifully-bred inare and one that might achieve undying fame at the stud. In Australia the Nightmare family from which the filly descends has produced many stout racehorses and the same thing may be said of the Maoriland branch of the tribe, while her infusion of Trenton and Grafton blood must also suggest gallopers of staying tendencies.
As evidence that his racing ordeals at the recent Riverton and Southland- R.C. meetings did not do him any harm, but on the contrary served to improve him, Red Boa has been moving well on the S.R.C. tracks this week. When proceeding to the ■galloping grounds he has been stepping out boldly and when sent to the tracks he has' accomp’ ! shed his work on the bit. The son of Balboa may not be at his best yet, but he is developing confidence in himself and this fact may point to useful form if he is raced moderately at the Dunedin J.C. Winter fixture. The sturdy chestnut may form one of T. E. Pankhurst’s string for Wingatui next week, a team which will include Miss Redowa and Night Maid, both of whom came through the recent S.R.C. fixture without the loss of condition and a credit to their trainer.
Among the mares recently booked to the local imported English sire, British Empire, may be mentioned a full sister to the galloper Martis, a matron called Gorgeous,, by Martian—Eoa, by Birkenhead—Eon, by Medallion—Enid, by Apremont—ldalia (claimed to be the most consistently successful brood mare by Maoriland pedigree history'). A Southland-bred mare booked to the Sunstar horse will be recognized in Soldier’s Fancy, by Soldier’s Chorus—Red Start (an Eastern District matron who produced a long line of winners for her owner Dr. J. E. Rogers). This is the family from which two recent performers of merit claim descent, viz., French Fleet and Red Racer,
While several local trainers have not yet got very far with the education of their youthful yearling and two-year-old charges designed for next season’s racing, F. J. Mcay has for, some time, past been superintending the tasks of the promising pupils in light track exercise. The baby racers referred to are rising two-year-old fillies by Chief Ruler —Simper and Tractor —Dazzling Light and an elder gelding by Arausio from Gold Light, The last-named, a shapely youngster who represents the first of the progeny of the brilliant Gold Light, is going on the right way at present and when the spring season comes round he will probably be submitted to an early test for galloping ability. The Chief Ruler—Simper filly, who reminds one of her half-sister, Lucky Light, is a sweet tempered and quiet youngster who is improving in looks every week, while her companion of similar age by Tractor is well-grown, nicely-turned, and undoubtedly a budding performer who should furnish into a winner. She is an attractive Southland-bred youngster • and can compare favourably on looks with the Chief Ruler filly, who first saw the light of day in the North Island. i
The acceptances for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting are of a decidedly encouraging character and reveal the fact that all doubts have been set at rest by a very fair response from owners where steeplechase events are concerned. A field of seven remains for the Otago Steeplechase and a perusal of the names encourages the belief that an interesting contest will be staged on Saturday next, with Snowfall, a promising stayer, to represent the home province. When the defections are mentioned as Fabriano, Ka puna, Overhaul, Hymestrason, Taramoa and Balvasco, it will be understood that mishaps or failure to train on for an extended journey of about three and a quarter miles has proved their undoing. There are ten left in the Hunters’ Steeplechase, thirteen remain in the June Hurdles, and the various flat events have attracted-fields that should satisfy the most exacting and induce lovers of winter racing to attend Wingatui on Saturday next and during the ensuing week.
The well-known galloping mare, Spark ling Eyes, by Solferino —Eager Eyes (imp.j, has changed hands and will be relegated to the stud next season. The sister to Listening Post is to be mated with the imported English horse British Empire.
According to Hawkes Bay reports, Ponjola is to compete at the Auckland and Hawkes Bay meetings, but will miss the Wellington R.C. Winter gathering to be re served for the Grand National Steeplechase.
The well-bred mare Oatland, by Balboa-— Wild Oats (imported) 'is one of the matrons booked to the English sire British Empire for the forthcoming season. TAUMARUNUI RACING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. The following are the acceptances for the Taumarunui Racing Club’s meeting on May 24:— MANUNUI HACK HURDLES -HAND! CAP, £lOO. About one and a-half miles.
LATEST SCRATCHINGS. , (Per United' Press Association.) Taumarunui, May 23. Arch Eagle was scratched for all engagements at the Taumarunui races at 10.45 this morning. THE PROSPECTS REVIEWED. (Special to' the Times.) t Auckland, May 23. For the poor stake money to be won ex ceptional fields have been paid up for at the Taumarunui meeting, to-morrow, and it is more likely than not that there will be a large number of course scratchings reported. There are a few horses claiming engagements in the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie next Tuesday week, but outside-of this the fixture will not rise above the usual country standard.
Tho following will be well supported in their engagements: MANUNUI HACK HURDLES (11.5).— Master Roley, Spalupin, Waltzer.
MAIDEN HANDICAP (11.45).—First Di vision: Stonehenge, Royal Visitor. Second Division.—New Boy, Sister White. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP (12.30).— Prince Hal, Maori Boy, Flying Juliet. ' MATIERE HACK (1.10)—On Top, Snow Prince, Gold Lily.

Interesting Work.
There was some interesting work wit nessed at Te Rapa yesterday morning, the flags on the* course proper were out 35 feet and the going was soft. Most importance was attached to the doings of the jumpers, notably Star Comet, Wiltshire and Pouri, and the first pair lost few friends by their efforts. With his usual pilot, P. Brady, Star Comet (the big hurdles favourite) was given a sound gallop over a mile and a half. He maintained a solid pace and was clocked to make about 14 to the furlong, winding up the essay in 2min 52sec. The last mile and a quarter took 2min 23 4-ssec, the last six furlongs Imin 21 l-ssec, the last five in Imin 12 2-ssec and the half mile 57 2-ssec. Star Comet was striding out very freely when he reached the post and there is no question that he will strip as fit as hands can make him by the time the Northern Hurdles roll round. There is an indication that Star Comet will start a big favourite at Ellerslie on Tuesday week and, what is more, he will very nearly win, in fact in the Waikato he is regarded as a certainty. Wiltshire (N. Syme) acquitted himself in fine style over five jumps, two brush fences and three hurdles. He set off at the mile post and safely negotiated three fences along the back and on the second circuit was allowed to negotiate a couple more. It was the display of a polished jumper and the free and easy gait at which he took his fences gave the impression that he is a better horse now than ever. Pouri is still under a cloud. He moved stiltily after doing threequarter pace work and it will take some doing to get him to the post at Ellerslie next month. ASHBURTON RACING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY.
