FLYING TRAGEDY

BURIAL OF VICTIMS.

IMPRESSIVE SCENES.

(Per United Press Association.)

Te Awamutu, May 23

The funeral of the victims of Wednesday’s aeroplane disaster took place to-day at the Te Awamutu cemetery. A short service was held in the old historic church of St. John’s, 'which was a military church for the English and colonial troops in the Maori War days. The caskets were covered by wreaths, while that of Captain Saunders was draped with the Union Jack with the airman’s cap above. The service was conducted by the. local Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist clergy as well as the Rev. Scrimgeour, of Auckland. The latter had been a comrade of Captain Saunders in the war zone as well as in the Auckland Aero Club. The pallbearers for Captain Saunders were members of the Auckland Aero Club and for Alfred W1 Minchin, fellow members of the local football club.

The Municipal Band headed the cortege, which was the longest ever .seen here, taking 12 minutes to pass a given point. A brief service followed at the graveside. At the conclusion the “Last Post” was sounded. Later in the day two aeroplanes flew low over the cemetery, dipping gracefully as a tribute from their fellow airmen.
